Re: Capel Has Been Fired
Maybe McMahon was the head coach of a Watauga County U8 team? Cobb did say "regardless of level".
It also puts Jeff Capel into play.

Until someone among the masses on this board is willing to step up and write the big checks to get them they aren't viable.IGgreer wrote:They are viable candidates according to the masses on this board...App91 wrote:To quote the great John McEnroeIGgreer wrote:Bruce Pearl

Pearl is out of coaching and turned down a $500K job with the NBA's Developmental League. Greenberg's last contract at Va Tech was a package worth $850K annually. I'm sure ESPN is paying him very well.

I was named interim head coach of my little brother's YMCA team after the head coach caught mono. Do you think that counts?T-Dog wrote:Cobb said at the presser that he's looking for a coach with head coaching experience, regardless of level. That rules out McMahon.

Re: Capel Has Been Fired
Anyone on the face of the earth except Greenberg. He is a miserable person to try and get along with. He was not fired from VT because of his record. He was fired because of his personality.
Re: Capel Has Been Fired
Let's sit back and watch this play out. I suspect that there are already 30-50 email's or faxes on (or about) CC desk.
There will be lots of interest, not because we are Appalachian. But because most of the people would like to take the next step in their career.....and then the next.
I just want respectable play, hustle, and actual coaching from the bench.
I have yet to see that from our head coach in the last 4 years.
Good Luck Charlie Cobb. I have faith in your decision making!

After passing on him 4 years ago, McMahon should tell us to shove it and I don't blame him. He was way more qualified than Capel

Re: Capel Has Been Fired
Cobb's job is very safe. He talked some BOT member into pushing through a 3 year contract extension for him back in the summer. With a new chancellor coming on board Charlie protected his arse.Rekdiver wrote:The irony in all of this is, if CC gets it right his job is safe.

You didn't even come close to saying that. If you had I would not have responded the way I did.Rekdiver wrote:As Ii said.....if this doesn't work out then CCs contract will not be renewed in 3 years......

Re: Capel Has Been Fired
I'd approach Lutz first, to gauge if there is any interest. He showed interest in the Troy job the other year, so we may not be out of the question. The timing could be right, with a somewhat letdown year at State (barring an ACC tourney run) plus he's getting ready to come off the UNCC payroll. Guess we'd learn if he really wants to be "the man" again, or if he's just happy with a good seat at ACC games.
Re: Capel Has Been Fired
We don't want Greenberg for the reasons mentioned previously. I don't think Pearl would come and he has too much baggage as well. But these ideas are not too far fetched. Look at what former Clemson and Auburn coach Cliff Ellis is doing at Coastal Carolina. Not too shabby.
As for Jeff Capel and Tommy Amaker, I don't see either of them being the right fit. Amaker loves Harvard, where his wife also works, and he can dominate the Ivy League. Capel will likely get another oppotunity at a larger school with deeper pockets in the next couple of years.
The coach at Robert Morris is an interesting candidate. I went to RMU for graduate school and he has really tuned the program around. You may recall they beat Kentucky in the NIT last year, they finished 1st in the NEC and may punch their ticket to the NCAA's tomorow night. Worth a look for sure.

Re: Capel Has Been Fired
This was posted by a National recruiting analyst for Future150.com
Garrett Tucker @GTuckerF150
2014 Sipsey Valley (AL) PF Rasheed Worrell will seek his release from Appalachian State after the firing of their coach
We've heard the rumors that Flomo would ask for his release if Capel was not renewed but it looked like Worrell was more solid. We'll just have to see how this all plays out.
EDIT: To be complete I forgot to add that Worrell has not posted anything, not even re-tweeting these posts (there have been a couple more). Future150 is one of the top Basketball Recruiting sites but until we here directly from Worrell and Flomo anything is speculation.

Re: Capel Has Been Fired
Let me make sure I understand: The only two coaches in the history of App State basketball to take us to the NCAA Tournament were both young first-time head coaches; both took over a program in shambles coming off multiple 20-loss seasons - and we should therefore eliminate coaches with a similar profile before the search even begins?Kgfish wrote:Pretty stupid way to approach this thing. Re: Jason Capel Has NOT Been Fired
Yes, and when I die, I expect people will say "No, he didn't die. Actually, what happened was that God did not renew his lease on life!"asu66 wrote:It's just as improper to say that Jason Capel was fired; as it was to say that Jerry Moore was fired. Both were on contracts with very specific expiration dates. That seems to be an extremely hard concept for some of our folks to comprehend. It means that when the calender reaches a certain clearly stated date; that all coaching responsibilities end and all salary and vacation have been earned; and will be paid in accordance with the written contract or agreement. It means our agreement with "you" is over and we'll be entering into an agreement with someone else. Period. No one was fired!
Capel's contract not renewed at Appalachian St.
Capel is in the final year of a four-year deal that expires at the end of March. The former North Carolina player -- whose brother Jeff is on Duke's staff -- was the youngest coach in Division I when he was hired in 2010.
The Mountaineers went 9-21 this season, were 5-11 in their final season in the Southern Conference and were eliminated in their league tournament opener by Samford. They went 53-70 in four seasons under Capel.
Appalachian State joins the Sun Belt next season and Cobb said, "We have decided to do so with new leadership."
Capel was 30 when he was promoted in April 2010 to replace Buzz Peterson after Peterson left for UNC Wilmington. Capel led Appalachian State to a 16-15 record in his first season in 2010-11 but followed that with three losing seasons. His teams went 32-38 in SoCon play.
The school says its search for Capel's replacement will begin immediately.
