I think we had a similar situation a few years ago in football - a kid left Vandy and transferred to APP after their spring game (think he was their leading tackler that day) - Vanderbilt wouldn't release him and he couldn't play that year and I think got injured and never played for us - (my old brain is full of worthless info so this might not be correct)JCline0429 wrote:I'm in the corner of not freeing Donte up, but I wonder how we would feel if the situation were reversed.

You are one of three people:
- a family member
- a wolfpack fan
- DG's AAU coach
If you are DG's AAU coach thanks providing us this valuable advice, unlike Devonte we aren't buying it. If you are you've already screwed up (your words) one year of Devonte's life. This is on you not App State.
If there had not been tampering App State releases him, unfortunately that doesn't appear to be the case.
Wrong on all the above.
- A Broughton High and ASU graduate. So maybe being a Broughton alumni makes me a FAMILY MEMBER![]()
- A born UNC fan (that never liked Capel)
His selfish and stubborn Ego screwed up the Heels team. And screwing up again.
Whatever I said that has pissed you all off, Get over it and recognize where the problem is with the team.
Perhaps, the kid actually realized this coach and team was a bust.
Oh yeah, If anything else to say look for me at the game tonight. I will have the "FREE DTAE" shirt

Re: Devonte Graham
Devonte and App signed a contract, two parties agreed to the terms.
App was Devonte's best offer at that time and signed on the dotted line. Signing an agreement like that can help take pressure off of a 18 year old. Devonte then had a good senior year and an even better playoffs. AAU coaches and perhaps even other universities (which isn't legal) started talking to Devonte about "better" opportunities.
There is at least one party in the wrong here, let me list them: Devonte - not following through on a committment, AAU coach - some (not all) of these guys are a cancer to high school basketball, any school that contacted Devonte or his family or his coaches to discuss him coming to their school knowing he signed a LOI.
If App did or does that we should be embarassed and stop that practice immediately.
Good luck to Devonte. He has learned a valuable lesson at an early age. When you sign something, mean it, the other party will 99% of the time hold you responsible.

We may never get a recruit from Devonte's school, but if we do I bet they take their NLI serious.
ASU66 will remember the details better than I do but I don't believe Donte ever signed a LOI wth us because he did not have the required test scores. Thus when he went to prep school he was free to sign anywhere.

It was a sordid affair. Actually, Donte did sign a LOI with App in the early signing period. His scholarship offer and his signing were dependent upon him obtaining a qualifying SAT score before the opening of the fall semester. All was well until Donte became MVP of the State AAA tourney while leading his West Rowan Falcons to the state championship. Then EVERYBODY wanted him. The only prob was he was legally bound to ASU by his signed LOI.
Opposing basketball recruiters knew that all they had to do to get their hooks into Donte was to convince him to intentionally flub his summer Sat test. That would automatically make him ineligible to play at Appalachian. Once that was checked off the checklist, these unscrupulous coaches had to get Donte into a prep school program for a year to beef up this core course credentials and then get him to take the SAT over again for real. At that point, his recruitment was re-opened. Appalachian and any other program were free to go after him.
Donte's high school coach at West Rowan, Mike Gurley, and former C of C coach Tommy Herrion were the bad guys in Donte's recruitment. Herrion tried in every way possible to get Donte to Charleston. When Charleston fired him for unscrupulous dealings, he moved to UVA as an assistant coach under his old mentor, Pete Gillen. Again, Herrion went after Donte--and this time he was successful. He filled Donte's head full of fantasy. Donte turned his back on Fancher and signed with UVA--only to sustain a nagging knee injury that took away his leaping ability. Although he started several games at UVA. he fell out of favor because of his injured leg. When Pete Gillen was fired (bought out of his contract), the new coach Dave Leitao immediately let Donte know that his scholarship would not be renewed. Donte was damaged goods and Leitao had someone else in mind. There was a lot more dirty dealing from Donte's "handlers," but you get the idea of how nasty it got. Donte struggled emotionally for a couple of months and finally called Fancher--who took him back and provided the training/medical support to nurse him back to health. He also provided him tutorial support to get his GPA back under control. You know the rest of Donte's story. He became a special player for the Apps and graduated on time. He also engineered a win for the Apps over his old UVA team in the San Juan tourney. That was a sweet, sweet win for Donte Minter! And for Houston Fancher.

Re: Devonte Graham
I think you're talking about Hamilton who signed w/ UTEP but wanted out to join Alford at UCLA. The situation is different because Hamilton did not go to prep school, he enrolled at UCLA. He will sit out one year then play. Devonte enrolled at a prep school and will have to sit out of college basketball 2 years, not 1 (he still has to sit out his first year at whatever college he attends). That's what is unheard of. Everyone lets players out of their LOI if they opt to attend prep school.appst89 wrote:New Mexico is holding a kid to an LOI he signed before Alford took the UCLA job. This is another example of a player transferring directly from one college to another and sitting out one year. Devonte didn't do that, he enrolled at a prep school, effectively sitting a year out. He still has to sit out his first year at whatever school he attends, unless we release him.WVAPPeer wrote:I think we had a similar situation a few years ago in football - a kid left Vandy and transferred to APP after their spring game (think he was their leading tackler that day) - Vanderbilt wouldn't release him and he couldn't play that year and I think got injured and never played for us - (my old brain is full of worthless info so this might not be correct)JCline0429 wrote:I'm in the corner of not freeing Donte up, but I wonder how we would feel if the situation were reversed.

Re: Devonte Graham
He didn't choose to enroll at the prep school until after we didn't release him from his LOI when he first tried to back out. I've been following this daily on twitter since the state championships. His AAU coach, family, and friends have been a little too open with their ideas on social media. Should have used DM's. The hope was that if he chose to go to the prep school it would force us to release him so he wouldn't have to sit his first year in college. Bottom line, he could have waited until the April signing period but chose not to. By then the playoffs would have been over with and all the interest would have shown up. De-committing is easy. Backing out of a contract is not.wataugan03 wrote:I think you're talking about Hamilton who signed w/ UTEP but wanted out to join Alford at UCLA. Looks like Graham will be sitting out an additional year and it appears he doesn't care. He has obviously moved on and has no intentions on APP.

Regardless of if learns anything or not, can we just lock this thread until there is an official statement by App or the NCAA?

CVAPP_, I assume you are being sarcastic. Had I made a new post, asu66 may not have noticed to whom it was to, just like this one. At any rate as Flo said, "you can kiss my grits." You will notice that asu66 didn't answer my question anyway as to how he knew Donte intentionally flubbed his SAT. Now maybe he will see this post since it isn't quoting "the whole damn thread" as you said.
Plus, it's not like I'm the only one who quotes entire threads. I've had many times I've tried to quote and got the pop up about not being able to imbed another quote.
