No, these are guys who beat us quite often. But that could be just about anyone couldn't it?MountainMan wrote:Kgfish wrote:That isn't my opinion but the opinion of several SoCon head coaches that was expressed to a college coach I know very well.MountainMan wrote:In all honesty, this one totally escapes me. Capel has had his problems and was thrown in with way too little experience, but I don't think he had anything close to the best talent in the conference for his first two seasons. He had several good players, and I agree they often failed to play up to their potential, but the overall team had almost NO depth, lots of player turnover both of those years, and once we got past the first 3-4 players the talent level dropped way off.Kgfish wrote: Capel had the best talent in the conference his first two seasons ....
Are these the same SoCon head coaches of teams that should not be respected at all because all of SoCon basketball is loserville? Other teams in the SoCon are terrible so obviously they have bad coaches and are poor judges of talent, UNTIL we need them to make an assessment about how good the ASU talent base is?

Re: Capel
I love Coach Satt and hope he's here for a long time but if an ACC or SEC program approaches him with a million dollar contract and a chance to coach in a BCS league I expect he would be gone.kgblade wrote:I think Sidney Lowe is available, if he doesn't have to build time for tax evasion. We could try him. There's also the guy that coached at Tennessee, Bruce Pearl. Dino Gaudio, maybe. Give it a year or two and Mark Gottfried should be available. And one of those guys sitting on K's bench is going to be let down when he isn't chosen to take his place and will look for somewhere to be a head coach.
There are plenty of decent alternatives, and yes, Capel has had his due. Time to roll his arse off the mountain.
How lucky are we, really, as a football school to have a guy who absolutely loves APP as much or more than we do and isn't looking to make APP a stepping stone? Gotta love Satt.
As for Capel, he will be here next year and I hope App wins 25 games, the conference and makes the big dance and Capel remains for a decade. Either way gotta pull for Capel's and Apps success. Winning the SoCon Tourney would be a good start!

Re: Capel
Just to be clear, I'm not posting this to say that Capel is a great coach, should be extended, etc. but just to provide some perspective:
Men's Basketball Preseason Poll And All-Conference Team
When the season started, we were projected to finish 4th in the North without a player on the all-conference team. A 2nd place finish and a 1st team all-SoCon year from Nate Healy are a few positives to take from the 2013 season.
I know that Capel didn't recruite Nate, much of his success cannot be coached and is attributed to all the hard work he's put in, the conference as a whole is weaker than expected and we had some horrible collapses. In reality, this team should be no worse than 12-6 in conference play and would have likely won the North if we'd hung on to a few late leads.
But hey... at least we aren't UNCG fans! Predicted to win the North, finished 8-21 and dead last... ouch.

Which reminds me, we haven't heard from StevenH in a very long time.
