I expect “ improvement “ at least on a cycle. If we peaked last season ok , it’s a rebuild but it’s a rebuild from a team that didn’t make post season. There is also the issue of the contract extension of last year , the justification of which was “ that we had turned the corner “. The JMU series was a wake up call for me to lower expectations.
We were 19-8 heading into a top 25 RPI matchup v JMU. A sweep for us there had us in a good position. We were better than .500 last year by the way. But yes, we overperformed the first 25 games due to our bats.
My bad 30-25

Ouch. Then Boyd, now hitting cleanup, pops a bunt up 2 on no out. Have to get it down.

Timely hitting, bats are hot. Need Wilson to find it here and get us the W.

Wilson rocked again, just less rocked than usual. 4 2/3 9 hits 4 ERs only 3k’s. Leaves the ball up too much especially his changeup. If he could get that changeup lower he would do some damage.

We’re into the pen in the 5th up 9-4. Here we go.

LaSpaluto in. 1st batter, 3 run bomb. 9-7. If our starters don’t throw 6 shutout we have to score 15 to win.

This ball park is a few pop-up tents down the baselines from being a travel ball field.

The outfield fence looks like something out of Sandlot. Honestly though, the wooden fence in Right center, is dangerous and creates safety concerns. Wooden with missing pieces and sharp edges. I would hope the SBC would force them to fix some issues soon.

Hitting clinic, still a couple bonehead mistakes but playing well overall.

20-7, we pulled away. Arkansas Staye is horrible. Need a sweep badly. Little had his best performance in relief this year.

Dominated the line of scrimmage and just wore them down.

Wouldn’t mind a few more wins by a football score this weekend. At the rate they’re going, they’ll be throwing short stops in relief by tomorrow evening.

Yes kind of a good game... lots of issues... slow to move CJ down in order... really needs to around 7th or so.... I hate to say this as former pitching coach and working with hitters... CJ does not look comfortable at the plate... he's swings at balls out of the strike zone... struggles to hit the middle of the ball....gets underneath the ball... even on his two bunt attempts... he got underneath the ball. And how long is Wilson going to be our #1 pitcher? He's had two games where he gave up 5 HR's and today 3...... Steensma, Cherico and maybe put Wilson in long relief....... The only saving grace today was our run scoring ability.... had Arky had some people on base it would have been a different story.

I think Ark St used all their pitchers except Saturday and Sunday starters...but at the same time...all their pitchers may still be available 😂😂

CJ will get it figured out. Hopefully moving down will take some pressure off of him and he can get back into form.

For Wilson, who do start if you put him in the BP? I can't think of anyone else.
When will "It's better than what we had" no longer be good enough for App State?

For a stint last year, if I remember correctly, we went Sunday starter by committee for a period. I would be all for that...or moving him to Sunday..We got some good teams coming up..be nice to start the series win a chance to win. Wins are never guaranteed, but feel we have better chance if 33 is pitching game 1.

I was hoping for a change after JMU game with the lineup and Boyd’s struggles. Holderbach is an on base machine, needed to be at the top with ASL (probably our purest hitter). Banks needed to be protected with a bigger bat than Church, so switching Holderbach with Boyd was essentially the move. Get the guys on base and let Tolley/Boyd swing away. Getting Moronta back in a groove could be huge.

I might keep Wilson Friday because we’re usually going up against an ace as well. Wouldn’t want to waste a huge Steensma start Friday and get shutout that same day and be toast for Sat Sun. If we give Wilson Friday, Steensma can dominate his opposing pitcher Saturday. And then rubber match can go either way. Maybe that’s what coaches are thinking.
