We use several pitchers as pinch runners.
Over an outfielder with speed that's one of your best bats and position players? That's brutal.

Tough loss, was 1 pitch away from a win. 9th inning homerun for Troy was too big emotionally to overcome.

Feel like we should be 4-0 Vs. Troy yet somehow 1-3.
Not going to debate your opinion because I don’t disagree. But if we hold on in the 9th, it’s a moot point.

Well, we live for another day tomorrow. Tougher road...but can be done.

Long way back now. They gave us some runs with the errors and we gave them back. Hard to go high school style putting in a pinch runner then he plays in the field then comes in to pitch with no bullpen warmups. Tough loss for sure.
And had to hit. We subbed out .325 LF with speed/experience for a pitcher that hasnt had an AB since 2020 covid year. Interesting. We move on, still have a chance!
Couple strange things cost us this game. Holding a runner on second with two outs made no sense to me. If we are in normal depth, easy ground ball to short to get out of the inning but since he is closer to the second base bag he can't make the play and a run scores. Also, I hate the shift and it cost us in this game as well. A would be easy double play (if my recollection is correct) ground ball to second goes through and scores a run because we have our second baseman on the third base side of the bag in a shift, a run scores and the inning continues with another run eventually scoring. Clearly coaches know way more than I do, but I hate the shift and it caught us there. Only good thing about Hamilton leaving early is his pitch count was lowish so he may be available if we continue to advance through the lower bracket.

We will need Hamilton again if we get that far. Haven't heard a peep about Caleb Cross injury and haven't seen him in 2 weeks. Or Dylan Rodgers. Safe to say they are injured an unavailable? Man, the injury bug got us at the wrong time if these 2 are out.

Rogers was in the original starting lineup and got pulled at the last minute. Must have hurt something in warmups or discovered during warmups that whatever he must have hurt since Saturday wouldn't allow him to play.

I'm pretty sure I haven't seen Carson Arnold this season - what's the story on that?
Television screwed up the lineup.

I figured you meant that TV listed him as our starting center fielder today. They had him listed instead of Hunter Wilder. If you're talking about the rest of the season, all I know is he has gotten little to no playing time.

This was a gut punch. We looked to be in control early, then late. You guys know more about the ins and outs of baseball so I will leave the analysis up to you but this was very much a lost opportunity , in a year of such .Devasting given what it could have done for the program and how it just slipped through our mitts.

Regarding the strategy of the game down the stretch - yes, it was a gut-wrenching loss but that is BASEBALL - As to the substitutions I don't think I would have pinch run unless there was a problem, but at that point the Coach isn't thinking what might transpire in the bottom of the 9th or in extra innings - he is just trying to get to extra innings. Look, we got to their All-Conf closer for 4 runs and they got to our closer in the bottom of the 9th - I honestly said to myself after he got their top 2 HR hitters out - "You gotta keep the ball down", their next batter knew he was fired up after striking out the guy who had hit 27 HRs and he would be looking for fastball up in the zone - "Keep the ball down" - Shit, there is goes ---

It's hard to complain much when we come from behind in T9 and take a two run lead with our closer ready to go. The player from Troy made a great swing and tied it. The ball was high and running in yet he got all of it. If he's just a tiny bit below it we get a fly ball to end it.

We played well enough to win against a team that's likely getting an at-large bid in a defacto road game.

I agree with one of the comments above. We had good opportunity to go 4-0 against Troy. But that is college baseball and makes this time of year for baseball so enjoyable. No lead too large and one swing of the bat can change things.

Hunter Wilder played CF until they pinch hit for him late in the game.

Who do we expect today on the bump? My guess is Chirico. Whoever gets the nod is going to have to go deep as we used 4 of our better arms yesterday. Go Apps, kick Apps.

Edit- Chirico gets the nod. No Rodgers in lineup. Seems like Cross and Rodgers are unavailable, such a bummer those guys were fun to watch and competitors. Next men up!

We all know it would take a major miracle to make a run to Sunday. Baseball can be crazy but without pitching you generally don't have a chance. It would be great to get a win today and most likely a rematch with Troy again tomorrow. We can definitely beat them.

The TV broadcast also showed Gillespie and Terrell both playing 3rd base. I was wondering what kind of new shift strategy was going on haha

It’s the baseball version of the “Annexation of Puerto Rico” play.

No .We did not play "well enough to win" .We lost because we did not play well enough to win.Troy did and beat us.Perhaps today will be different.I hate JMU.We just blew a great opportunity in the First...
