Such is baseball. Good to be able to hold on, even against an inferior opponent.

Yeah, baseball is a screwy sport in that way. They play a bunch of games and it's not uncommon for an "inferior" team to pull off a win.

I just didn't want to be the team that Siena got their FIRST win of the season against! LOL

Why is the "dirt" on these new turf fields so dark?

They have cancelled all the rest of spring and winter championships to include the College World Series the anticipation is that no conference will resume playing now.

This hit me funny so I have let this simmer in my head for a little bit; the NCAA is adverse to making good decisions so that led me to this opinion: they are like the kid who gets mad at how the game is so they take their ball and go home, no one gets to play. The NCAAs members basically dictated to the NCAA to cancel the tourney. Duke and Kansas said they weren't going to play before the tourney was cancelled and I imagine others would have followed suit. So Emmert and Co. got in their feelings and just said screw it all until football season starts(because we all know they are not messing with the golden goose). Just my two cents.

Waaaaayyy too much into this question. Lets say they do, ok, then what about incoming freshmen and those schollys. Then do we have to raise the scholly number. BB is what 11.3? 11.7? so do we have to fund more schollys, or do we divide that with the incoming freshmen. eligibility? sure give 'em another year . Way too many things to be worked out. Honestly the only practical way is just to move forward as it is. Sorry for the seniors in all sports, life just got in the way. Harsh, i know.

How much money are we talking about? That is going to be something on a case by case basis. I was talking about eligibility only. I doubt that we have anyone on Spring sport rosters that is on full scholarship, so it might not be a great deal. Yes, there are a great deal of questions that would need to be answered, but there is such a thing as, doing the right thing. To be clear, I am not advocating that anyone that has completed their “Regular” season, be granted another year of eligibility.

I was thinking about this on the way into work this morning. AppSt94 came to the same conclusion I did. At first glance, it would make sense because of the impact to the players (lost opportunity, potential drafts, etc.). The financial question is no small thing to programs like App. The major Power programs wouldn't feel it but we would. If they made that ruling, they would also be setting a precedent that would apply to fall sports if (God forbid) this thing isn't resolved by then.

Regarding the opportunities for these Seniors, extending eligibility would address the opportunity issue somewhat but it would be at the expense of the rest of the players. There is a finite number of opportunities to be offered, so any action seen by an "extended" player would be at the expense of another athlete who would have been playing. Also, the MLB draft will still happen, so those draft opportunities aren't gone. They are just possibly altered by the limited exposure this season.

This situation stinks any way you look at it for the student athletes.

It does stink and I hate it for any senior. Any granting of an extra year of eligibility would then directly affect an incoming freshman. So the "fair" way would be to expand all rosters to include both? But then how are scholarships affected and the number given out. And then who pays and how. Shoot, how do you house and feed these athletes?

This is way too big of a conundrum just to take the easy road and grant all an extra year. But that "feels" good so it will be the natural reaction of some without thinking the whole thing through.

I ask this. If you were a senior on,pick a spring sport, and you are on partial scholarship. If the athletic department offered you an opportunity to stay in school for one more year, and you get to stay with your partial scholarship, would you stay and pay partial tuition for grad school or would you just move on with your life? I think that it is a fair thing to offer, but I doubt many student athletes would pause life just to play ball, tennis, or run track.

I want to preface my comments with the fact that I 100% agree with canceling the basketball tournaments just simply due to the current position in the lifecycle of this pandemic. With that said I think it was a rash decision to cancel all spring sports right now. Most certainly suspend activities for 30 days and reevaluate, but to just throw in the towel is obtuse to me. The NCAA under this current regime has been called many things but never proactive, I don't believe this was done for the benefit of the student athletes. I'm starting to believe it comes down to the lost money of the NCAA basketball tournaments. All these spring sports could have played abbreviated seasons/tournaments if the sports were just suspended. Heck baseball/softball could come back and play a double round robin for seeding in a conference tournament then roll into regionals, super regionals, College World Series. I just can't believe this was done in the best interest of the student athletes, I really can't.
