ETSU, who we play Tuesday at 6pm are 17-8 on the season (.568 in the last 6 seasons). In that same stretch App is .392. Wonder why the weather and the locales they play in hasn’t affected them the way it has us…since those are the excuses more than 1 person here has given as to why App baseball doesn’t win.

ETSU is 1525 feet above sea level. Not even close to the same as Boone at 3333. Hickory is 1188.

Baseball needs to play the first half of their season in Hickory.

Out of 26 games only 9 have been played at home so far (with the three from this past weekend included). Hopefully we will be able to even things out some with a few more home games. Only 22 of 54 at home doesn't help either. Well less than an even split. Unfortunately it's what we have to deal with.

Well then, the ball should fly farther in the thin Boone air.

Baseball has played an all Division I schedule. No Boyces.

Texas State has a good team. They are far from" a top ten program" however.
Might want to check this out.

Good team this year , perhaps very good.Last year ? Ten years ago ? A great program ? If they sustain this for the next decade...

Sorry. I missed the post that said "historic" top 10 program. Only one I saw was referring to the team we played this past weekend, which is ranked 10th. That's what my response was about.

AppDiesel - I know you know a lot about sports and have shown that for some time and I understand you want your APPs to win more games but as a former high school coach for a number of years who worked college camps and interacted with a lot of college coaches - weather and location are the #1 factor that negatively affect APP baseball - quality pitching is the key to any successful baseball team whether it be high school, college, pros and those high school pitchers who are recruited and told in no uncertain terms they will prosper playing in a warmer climate, especially places where they can work outside year round - the key to an APP developing a staff is possibly finding some gems who have been overlooked (although it is much tougher doing that than football because again warmer weather programs have a huge advantage) or to find a couple of guys in the portal who want a higher and more important workload - again, harder to get to Boone - I wish it weren't so - but it is

Just curious... isn’t the baseball field about 300 feet higher than the football field?

In that case, the weather isn't going to change in Boone anytime soon. As such, "middle of the pack" is the best we'll ever expect to achieve. Thus, why even have a team? Let's put the money elsewhere.

Softball is 19-14, 27-19, 13-9, and 31-25 in the last 4 seasons. Softball was BAD the two seasons before that.

Explain to me how softball can be .573 in the exact same weather, at the exact same altitude, playing their entire first month of their season on the road. I understand that baseball schedules tougher early season games but you can't blame a sub .400 record on 4 or 5 power 5 games per season.

I've given everyone clear evidence that it can be done in our region, done in our state, done in a similar climate to our own, and by another team at our university that plays at the same time. Admit it, we have the wrong coach.

***I reiterate, I want Kermit Smith to be successful but I want App to be successful more. I start this thread every year. I post game start times, next games, and updates as often as I possibly can. Often times I've been the only one commenting about a game. I do this because I care and I want other people to care too but so few do. I'm stirring the pot because I'm trying to get other people engaged with the team. I hope that it's working...but from reading the basketball threads we have a fan base that will happily abandon sports that aren't played with an oblong ball if they aren't winning.

I'm not questioning your thoughts, but the easiest answer to this statement is that you don't need a pitching STAFF in softball. One or two pitchers is about all it takes.

So he has gone from the 180-190 range his 1st 3 years to 107 this year. Seems like a move in the right direction to me. But what do I know.

We'll see where it ends up. We are 10-16 (.385 on the season) and just fell out of the top 100. I hope he can turn it around this season.
