ESPNU, David Jackson, and KBS PA
1. I actually liked the ESPN3 broadcast better than ESPNU for the sole reason that the announcers on ESPN3 stayed on topic during the game and half time rather than talking about the SEC, etc
2. David, Randy, and our color guy get better every week.
3. The PA must be better now as I could hear it loud and clear over the radio broadcast during quiet moments.

It's Roy Philpott calling the game. Oh he of the "famous" 24 hr sports station in Clemson, SC WCCP. Guy sucks on his own radio show. I cringed when I read he was gonna be calling the game.

Re: ESPNU, David Jackson, and KBS PA
That ESPNU broadcast was annoying.
1. The cameras made everything look extremely dark
2. Crowd noise was not picked up well.
3. The announcers couldn't stop mentioning Breida or Ironhead Gallon's names. I swear if someone made a drinking game out of that, they'd be dead by the end of the first quarter.
Despite all that, Kidd Brewer Stadium looked packed and it looked like an electric atmosphere.

Re: ESPNU, David Jackson, and KBS PA
Gals and guys, I've been a loyal follower of Appalachian sports since seventh grade when I made a road trip with my high school band to an App-sponsored band competition at the old Mountaineer Stadium on the site of the current Rankin Science Complex. That was such an awesome experience that I made up my mind then and there that Appalachian would be my college choice. I later put the musical instruments away and opted for football and track/field competition. My right and left knee blowouts changed that to soccer and field events (javelin and discus).S.Lewis15 wrote:That ESPNU broadcast was annoying.

Through all the years...60s...70s...80s...90s...and to date. I've never been more proud than to see our football program push GaSouth all over the turf last night in front of a fine Thursday night "gate" and a national TV audience. I've had the good fortune to live to see all of the positive growth of our athletic department and the improvement of several of our revenue and non-revenue sports. We Mountaineers have so very much to be thankful for. Much has been done; but much more remains to be done.
I have classmates and teammates from days of old who haven't been able to internalize the changes. They see Appalachian's future as belonging in the SoCon with Furman and Western; and they presently have no intention of continuing to support their alma mater as an FBS program in the Sun Belt Conference. While I'm not all that keen on the Sun Belt, I realize we had to start somewhere. I say, let's bloom where we were planted!
I hope to live long enough to change some minds and get a few movers and shakers from time gone by back in into harness and pulling their share of the load like they once did so very well.
And while the thought is on my mind...Eat your heart out, C-USA. Let's see how well ODU and UNCC do in your big 'ol media markets.

Good for you! As for your friends who can't get on board, my guess is they pull regularly for some ACC or SEC school while lamenting our step up. It's their loss.

Re: ESPNU, David Jackson, and KBS PA
I found the ESPNU commentators fixated on Breida and Ironhead as well, but then I nearly always feel like ESPN commentators spend more time talking about players for the team I'm cheering against, regardless of sport or school, so it may be all in my head.
Having said that, the lack of crowd noise being picked up on the broadcast was disappointing. It would only take 3-4 boom mics behind the App bench and easy enough to mix in what was described as a "great atmosphere" and "very loud crowd."

Re: ESPNU, David Jackson, and KBS PA
I can't comment on anything but the radio call. They sounded fabulous. I couldn't get the telecast, the feed, or find any way to watch. I am in Jamaica for my sons wedding and the rehearsal and dinner started 30 minutes before kickoff. I didn't have to worry about not seeing the game, ESPN U is not on the TV lineup anywhere I could find, Watch ESPN app doesn't work outside the USA and apparently my other live TV app doesn't either. The only way I had to keep up with the game was the APP State phone app and spotty resort wifi. But it did work and thanks to the great play by our Apps, I only had to excuse myself twice to check on the score. I did make it back to the room for the last half of the fourth quarter.
Thanks to the whole radio crew, you sound great in Jamaica mon!

Anybody who watched that game last night would have a positive opinion of the atmosphere at The Rock. There's no need to nitpick ESPNU production.
Their on-air crew did bring up Ironhead a lot.
Probably because his name is Ironhead. He's a good player, but not some transcendent who consistently makes game-changing plays. the commentators seemed convinced that he'd step on the field in the second half and immediately jump a route and take one to the house.
Breida, on the other hand, deserved the attention he got from ESPNU. Before the game, he was averaging over 10 yards a carry for the season. He gashed us on our first drive. The defense's adjustment on him (not letting him get the corner) was the key to the game.

Re: ESPNU, David Jackson, and KBS PA
You have to give the commentators credit for doing some homework. They made sure they referenced the Michigan game, complete with highlights of the Lynch FG block. Will those highlights be played from now until the end of time when we are on National TV? God I just hope we can knock off Tennessee or some other P5 soon so we can have something else to "hang our hat on" for ESPN. LOL

Re: ESPNU, David Jackson, and KBS PA
I brought a friend that had never been to the Rock. First thing he says, "Dude, your sound system sucks. I would have expected that from a high school". We have to do something about it. It was turned too loud which caused distortion and still had it's problems. But the worst thing was that they kept playing music while we were getting ready to snap. I don't know if that's on the PA guy or some staff member, but between that and the PA guy forgetting to kill his mic throughout the 2nd half, it was quite pathetic.

The only music, in my opinion, should be from our great Appalachian Mountaineer Band of Distinction.

field events (javelin and discus).
Chuck, I like you more and more the more I learn about you. Former 'thrower' myself and when I coach Track those are my events.

Does anyone know if this game will be rebroadcast at any point? I was there, but I'd love to watch it again.

Oh, it's the truth, but FIRST thing? I'd hope he'd have a few nice things to say before he got to the jabs. And if I were an ODU fan, I'd be rooting for App too. Just like I'm rooting for Clemson. When someone whoops you, you want them to whoop everyone else, too.BUTCH1991 wrote:

Okay, actually the first thing he said is, I don't think there's a hill in Norfolk, as he didn't like the climb up to the stadium, but as soon as we walked in, the first thing he ran into was that distorted music. Squeaky wheel gets the first attention. From there, it was all good. Loved the rest of the stadium and was surprised at how loud the place could get. I'm trying to talk another Non-App into the Arkansas State game. He's a UNC fan, but has tremendous respect for App - not an our poop doesn't stink UNC fan.appchicago wrote:Oh, it's the truth, but FIRST thing?
