Thanks for posting the link. My take on Coach Moore's comment about the timing of the announcement leads me to believe this is exactly what Spurrier wanted. If he had announced and made it effective after the season Shawn may have never gotten the consideration he now has a better chance of getting.

Nice comment about Moore by Sean:
They taught me how to win, how to treat people … I’ve had an opportunity to work for Jerry Moore and now Steve Spurrier, both of these guys, hall of fame guys,” Elliott said. “It’s an unbelievable feeling to know that you can gather knowledge from two of the best in the business. Certainly they’ve had a huge influence on my background and my coaching attributes. Without a doubt, they’ve molded my career.”

Watching the press conference reminded how shifty these types of folks can be. Spurrier denied making any suggestion other than recommending the AD pick an interim from his staff. Like they really had any other choice at this point in the season. Their AD claimed he alone picked Shawn after an evening's worth of conversations with their coaches, including Shawn and some of team members. Then he assured the reporters time and time again there will be a grand and exhaustive national search. Then when asked what qualities he as the AD was personally looking for in a candidate he describe somebody exactly like Shawn.

USC fans, like most fans much less SEC fans, will expect their AD to go out and get a big name coach for their big name program. I would not be surprised if threads exist on their fan boards about getting Chip Kelly from the Eagles, or stealing some other P5 program's head coach. Promoting from within without at least the illusion of a national search and conversations with known coaches will not be acceptable to the fan base, much less the booster support base.

Given that, unless Elliott can win out, and perhaps even then, being retained as the HBC is is not likely. It's not all grim though. A decent showing through the remainder of the season could land Elliot as a head coach at a G5 program, or maybe on staff at a big time P5 program. This is definitely a good opportunity for him to make a name and move up in the football world.

According to the discussons over on the Sunbelt board (CSNBBS), he is under heavy consideration by Georgia State. Probably just rumors, but could have legs

BWN retweeted someone who speculated that Elliott could be a candidate for Georgia State after the season. No idea whether he'd be interested. That seems like a job you take if you think it's the only way you'll ever get a HC opportunity.

GSU would be a tough situation. On the one hand, there is a lot of poptential and the bar wouldn't be set high. On the other hand, there is no culture for football success there and ZERO momentum. It would be almost like starting from scratch although you at least have a few good athletes with experience. It certainly wouldn't be a destination job, but turning them into a competitive program could serve as a good stepping stone.

I don't envy him that decision if it gets put in front of him.

No kidding. Even Shawn Elliot doesn't have enough energy to excite an empty Georgia Dome.

I wonder how he feels about working with Cobb and vice versa? Were those two on good terms when he left? How does he feel about the way Cobb handled things with his mentor Coach Moore?

Does anyone on this message board know for sure that Coach Elliot wants a permanent head coaching position?

I have no idea at all about that, NewApp. Only thing I can say is that if he isn't interested in being a HC, I would imagine there's someone on the South Carolina staff who is interested and would have been glad to take the interim job there.

Does anyone remember if Elliott interviewed with App to replace Moore?

I don't know if interviewed or not but I seem to recall that Charlie Cobb contacted him.

Oh, for the love of God, NO! Knute Rockne could'nt make a difference over there. He can do way better than that. Although I bet the rumors do have legs because it would make sense that Charlie would want to talk to him about it since he knows him so well and knows what he can do. But seriously, Shawn needs to give that one a "thanks, but no thanks."

Shawn was "consulted" during the HC search and he was not interviewed. All I will say, based on what I either witnessed or heard directly from a party involved, is that I would be shocked if Shawn would want to work with Cobb. Its no secret that most former players were not happy with how things were handled, and if you know Shawn at all, you'll know where he he fell in that discussion.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if GSU is interested in Shawn, especially since Cobb has history with him. I really find it hard to believe that Shawn would jump on that opportunity though. There's a lot of potential, but a HUGE amount of risk. I imagine he'll have other opportunities.

IMOp, the key word in your post is "risk" in regard to Georgia State.

If you view it as high-potential/high-risk, then it might be worth taking. I'm not sure the potential is all that great - or at least, the likelihood of realizing any potential doesn't seem very high.

On the flipside, the only way it's a risk is if Elliott is likely to get better HC opportunities (which he may, but I'm not certain about that). He could take the GSU job and never get anywhere with it, and he'd have no trouble finding another OL coach position, likely at a big school that would pay well.
