How deep will we be?

Unread post by bigdaddyg » Wed Jan 28, 2015 9:19 am

Just for the sake of conversation, if we didn't sign any recruits this year how deep are we (potentially) for 2015 and 2016? Do we have enough depth for two years? Of course we must and will sign kids but can we theoretically redshirt all of them (except maybe the kicker) this season?

depends on the position, we are loaded for the next 2 or 3 years at the wide receiver and qb positions (assuming we don't lose anyone), but you cant have enough defensive and offensive linemen, so I think we must keep addressing those positions every year. Overall, I think we are in great shape for the next couple of years, but I would love to see us if not this year, than next, land some really high quality lineman on both sides of the ball.

Given the number of players we redshirted, we should be fine.

We return all but two starters and most of the second string, and we redshirted about 20 players last year. Plus we signed four jucos who will certainly play this year. So I would say yes, we can absolutely redshirt every incoming freshman unless some are just too good not to play. We should be notably deeper than last year.

And we still have only about five projected senior starters this year IIRC, so we're in great shape for 2016 as well.

C Jesse Chapman
WR Malachi Jones
WR Simms McElfresh
WR Montez McGuire
DE Ronald Blair
FS Doug Middleton

Davante Harris will have a shot at RT also.

So that's 6-7. However, we'll play plenty of young guys at WR, so starting slots may be sort of fluid. And I expect Edge-Campbell to challenge Chapman. So to me, the biggest question marks for 2016 are replacing Blair and Middleton.
