I'm warming up my crow....

Unread post by manonabuffalo » Sat Nov 15, 2014 6:14 pm

I said it:
manonabuffalo wrote:This is the statement game, Ark State has consistently been in the top of the SBC regardless of who their coach is. I fully expect a high scoring contest, since StAte has been susceptible to the big play. In turn our D has looked pretty good, although the competition will be a step up this week. If Woody can keep StAte under 30 we win. We will need to win the turnover battle, and run clock with the lead. I hope Cox has a big day, Go Mountaineers!

Oh and to add to the fun here, if we go 1 and 1 for these next two games I will be a Satt Monkey the rest of his tenure at App State, will never call for his head, support him even if we go to rock bottom again, and eat the biggest plate of crow served. Hell just b/c I am a nice guy I might even become friends with Saint and WV.

SAVE THE DATE
This is the real statement game, I am now a converted believer. I will stick to my word.

I have officially put my crow on the grill. It will taste sooo good. :)

I am glad I didn't type what I said after the Liberty game. But I will take a plate. I love this team!

I never had any doubt we would have won 4 in a row, especially against the defending conference champs at their place.

I never came to the point of asking for SS to be fired. However, I often stated that SS and Company were not getting the job done. Special Teams aside, I'll take my crow well done, with fried taters and a tall cold mug of beer. Go Apps!

ManonBuffalo,
I thought about that specific quote when it became obvious that we were going to win the game yesterday. Kudos on manning up before others started the thread. Can't say I'm wild about some of your posts. I understand that we have had things that needed fixing...and that we still do. I just tend to edit myself and take a more positive, constructive approach in what I choose to say in public. Of course, then we have to debate what "constructive" means. All I'm saying is that I don't question anyone's "fan-hood" for what they choose to post, but I'm glad that App Nation is coming back together.

Go Apps!!!

I'm glad that you have turned the corner. You can offer great insight to what the game is like and for one look forward to you sharing you first hand knowledge of the game from a player's perspective here on out.

I was willing to give Satt time, but I'll be happy if he doesn't need it! One game doesn't establish a program, but that is certainly a statement win! And a huge step! Amazing to go into the Conf Champs home and not only win but to dominate for much of the game. I was not impressed with wins against the bottom, but this does. I have to admit that we have progressed. We went from not winning games we were suppose to win, to winning games we were suppose to win, to now a winning a game we were not suppose to win. The next step is to be consistent, which isn't a given with a young team.

The truth is I turned the corner a while back, likely by the end of the Ga State dismantling. I finally saw for the second time in a row the passion, desire, and fire our kids had been missing until the second series of the Troy game. ULM sweetened the deal but this game made me a believer. You can't just go into the reigning SBC champion's house, beat them in all facets of the game (minus special teams) and not make believers out of all of us.

I will offer my opinion as usual and I do so based off of my experiences and the results on the field. However, as stated by myself earlier this week Scott has now EARNED my respect as a head coach. That is a respect that I held for Coach Moore and will now carry on through his successor.

I know the game of football like an extension of my body, and would like nothing more than to discuss that here. We will all have to agree to disagree on how you offer one's opinions on a message board or what is off limits. However, in the end every fan here only wants App State to defy the odds and achieve greatness.

Win 4 in a row, I think it is safe to say they found consistency. Also our special teams are tragically bad consistently as well. :)

So speaking of special teams, what do you think the problem is? Is it do to a lack of depth, the absence of a full time ST coach or scheme? It is puzzling that they can't get this figured out this late in the season considering they are good at in game adjustment.

Coach and team deserve kudos for staying focused and fighting through the disappointing 1-5 start, turning the ship around, and leading the team to an impressive four game winning streak in conference play. That tells you something about the man's character, and the team's character, as well. It all starts with believing in yourself - even in the face of doubt and criticism from others. This is a huge momentum builder for next season!

2 problems with special team, lack of depth, which hopefully will be fixed when we get the full 85, but the second problem is much harder to fix, we need full time special teams coach, with our budget just don't see that happening anytime soon. As bad as it was yesterday, could have been much worse, twice on kick offs the return man was one tackle away from going the distance, one of those tackles was by the punter, yikes!!!

It looks like a perfect storm of, no coach, lack of depth, and young players.

Look at it like this, all of our kids came out of high school as that school's star player, even the walk-on players were a star somewhere. They show up at App State and for some fully expect to be a star again. A vast majority of these football players were never on the field during special teams plays in high school, nor do a vast majority of high schools devote much time to it. I know I only went out on special teams in high school for a few times, to try and block a kick, or if the usual players weren't getting it done. What kid coming out of high school ever says when I go to _______ school I want to be a gunner on the punt or kick off team?

So we have that aspect along with the fact our coaches have not been able to emphasize the due attention our special teams need. We had bigger issues early in the year, breaking in a brand new QB, and abysmal defensive play. Special teams went by the wayside until the our offense and defense were able to be effective. I fully expect an emphasis on special teams here on out, SS and company know that we almost lost the game yesterday because of them.

In 2004 our special teams were terrible, and that off season Coach Moore stood in our meeting room and said "I want 11 crazy suckers who want to play special teams, I don't care who they are", he then showed us a video of Buffalo Bills special teamer Steve Tasker and got us all pumped up. I remember forgetting that I had a primary position and wanted to be on the kickoff team to just go knock the snot out of someone.

Makes sense. Iagree that you need 11 crazy guys on St as it takes a special level of commitment. Frank Beamer really emphasizes the ST. If I was a coach I would give special privileges to my ST guys. Things like first in line at the training table, never carry your own bags on trips. Little things to get the players motivated to play on ST.

Special teams has to stop being an afterthought and start being a productive part of our game plan.
