Marcus Cox
Caught his interview with DJ at halftime of the basketball game last Saturday on TV. Talked about his record setting career and induction to the App State sports hall of fame. Very humble and well spoken. He is a high quality young man.

Re: Marcus Cox
I wonder if we will ever really see another true HOF App football player unless he is a guy from years back. Will the young, potentially great possible HOF type guys leave for a paycheck?

Didn’t Marcus and his father serve food at a concession stand one game a few seasons back? I could be mistaken on the player but I know I had some tasty Brunswick stew on a cold night. I believe it was the Georgia State game in 2022.

Great question. Who be a HOF worthy player from the last six years?Bigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 04, 2025 7:54 amI wonder if we will ever really see another true HOF App football player unless he is a guy from years back. Will the young, potentially great possible HOF type guys leave for a paycheck?
Possibly several from the 2019 team?

A few possible players could be ADG, D’Marco Jackson, Demetrius Taylor, Noah Hannon, Chandler Staton, Thomas Hennigan. They were all near the tops in App history at their respective positions, depending which stats you looked at.

Re: Marcus Cox
The huge variable I should have stressed in my question is the portal. In 10 years will we be talking about that HOF worthy player who stayed and was great for 3 seasons or so? Will we see that guy who started as a freshman, put up great numbers as a sophomore and junior and stayed for his senior season? It could happen but hard to tell. How many of those guys listed above would have passed up a six figure paycheck? I can’t recall if any of them had portal opportunities.ASUFan4863 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 04, 2025 12:20 pmA few possible players could be ADG, D’Marco Jackson, Demetrius Taylor, Noah Hannon, Chandler Staton, Thomas Hennigan. Re: Marcus Cox
Gotcha. I think it would be hard to vote a player to the hall of fame who leaves in the scenario you laid out. I would say a player who transfers in and has two great years to finish their career may be more likely to get in the HOF over a player who spends 3 years here and leaves before graduating.Bigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 04, 2025 1:10 pmThe huge variable I should have stressed in my question is the portal. To me, it would be all about the degree. Did they earn a degree at Appalachian State? If yes, I would consider them eligible for the HOF.

Re: Marcus Cox
It's asinine to get mad at kids who leave if they are offered large sums of money to play a sport. If you were offered 100k to study at Missouri vs 20k or even less at App...you'd probably be a Mizzou grad. Student athletes are no different than coaches or professional athletes or any professional at all anymore.NewApp wrote: ↑Tue Feb 04, 2025 7:23 pmBigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 04, 2025 1:10 pmThe huge variable I should have stressed in my question is the portal. This is all a lot easier to accept when the people against it just swallow that fact.
Being a smaller program - we have to hang our hats on the fact that we were able to identify and develop players who were undervalued out of high school & helped them garner attention to earn a pay day from bigger programs. The hope is that we do this successfully yearly and still field a competitive team. The excuse of losing players in the portal will diminish yearly. This is the new era we're in. It doesn't matter if you accept it or like it.
Every once in a while you will get a kid who could leave & doesn't. Those kids, who are extremely successful, will be the ones who get inducted into future HoF classes. But we will undoubtedly see a decrease in Football HoF inductees unless we change the criteria for induction. Just like we will rarely, if ever, have another retired number.

Re: Marcus Cox
I don’t blame a single young person for leaving App for a paycheck. Heck I was a regular student who majored in business. If by some chance a huge corporation or even another school had offered me big money to leave as a sophomore I’d said adios mountain. Sad to say but it was probably true.
