It seems like football has been offering a lot of scholarships lately. Obviously, not everyone that is offered accepts. How does it work? The first to accept get the offers until the roster is full?

And, it seems, we are reaching for higher level recruits (based on stars for some) than in the past.
Not saying stars make them better...just saying they have more offers to higher

The way I understand it is only specific players are a guaranteed take that if they accept the offer we will take them. Most are not an immediate take though. If a recruit verbally accepts the offer it's still only verbal and non-binding until the National Letter of Intent is signed. So, except for a select few, it's generally mutually agreed upon before announcing the commit. That's why a lot of times players that are immediate takes for us will commit to an offer early to get the P4s to start taking notice.

Typically the coaching staff will have a “big board” where they will have a ranking or order of desirability per position. A shopping list if you will. Example: say they have offer 10 QBs, whoever is #1 on the board would be the guy with first refusal of the scholarship. If the #1 option wants to slow play the staff then they, (the staff) can move to #2 and tell them both the first one to accept gets it. It depends on how close #1 and #2 and so on are in talent.

Not a bad strategy has it gets you in the mix if the kid slides down the list of bigger schools. And as Moose has said in the past, “you miss 100% of the shots that you don’t take”.

One area DL has an advantage is his inside knowledge of how P2 programs have shifted their recruiting strategies. If those programs aren't offering as many HS recruits that could lead to G5 programs landing "higher" targets as we shift into the proving ground for those programs.
Finding the players that want to be at a P2 program but understand they have a better shot starting as a freshman at a G5 and transferring would be a great niche to operate in.

I think you'll see some of that.

How long is it going to be before some blueblood tells a kid, "We don't have a spot for you right now, but we'll give you $50k to go to App and play this year, and then we'll bring you in next year?" I could see these arrangements being made between schools.

Since anything under P3 is a minor league system now, how much longer before conferences or schools become exclusive affiliates of P3 schools or conferences. ACC cuts a deal with the Sunbelt that gives each school a $amount like 2 million a year to be the ACC affiliate. Portal players go to ACC schools based on contractual agreements made in the initial recruiting of an athlete.

I wonder if that sort of arrangement would affect those schools scheduling G5 teams.

I can see it going even a step further...
Say Lenoir Rhyne, ETSU, App, and Tenn all "teamed" up to create a semi-farm system.
"You're not quite fast enough to play D1 yet, but I think with the right training in our speed focused program at LR, you can be D1 next year."
or
"You have the body to play SEC ball, but you just need some time in a college weight room. Go redshirt at App, here's 50k, and they already know their focus is getting you bigger to be able to play SEC ball"

Would we ever get another P3 game in Boone ever again? For that matter would any P3 have any need to play the better G5 teams?

There is a P2 or a P4, P3 is a unicorn that ACC fans are pushing.
We could get an ACC or BIG12 team to come to town, but I don't see the P2 signing up for a trip.
