Re: I am with you Coach Clark
I just don't see how they would decide to pull the trigger on a six figure buyout after 12/1 with things as they are in the area. The optics would be terrible and the decision tone deaf. People can't get in and out of their houses but we'll pop for 500k to get rid of a football coach, plus whatever bigger number it will take to get a good coach to come here? That's gonna be a really hard sell to make.
I think coach rides out the rest of his contract, or at least gets the 2025 season and then take the temperature of the overall situation again.

He’s not going to be able to recruit as a lame duck coach. Yeah agreed optics aren’t great but it is what it is.rbarthle17 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2024 10:35 amI just don't see how they would decide to pull the trigger on a six figure buyout after 12/1 with things as they are in the area. App football is worth much much more to the high country.
10k less people a game is probably taking $10MM out of the local economy and I’m probably under doing it.

Re: I am with you Coach Clark
I remember another thread recently where Gillin was on the attack against local businesses for not stepping up to help us grow together. That was before Helene. I think you way overestimate what people outside of ASU think of the value of ASU football. Your numbers can be true, or even close to true, and I don't think they will think of things in that fashion. Football is a nice shiny distraction in the abstract in times like this. When you start talking big money though, that's going change fast when you want to spend that kind of money for a coaching change when there is so much need in the area. Doesn't matter that it's completely separate buckets of dollars, the optics alone will be too bad to do it, at least in the short term.BallantyneApp wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2024 10:43 amHe’s not going to be able to recruit as a lame duck coach. Businesses are already starting to see the impact. Gripers will always gripe. This would be the proper move fiscally.

I have been a season ticket holder since 2001 and if clark is still coach next year I won't be renewing. Its sad to see this great program falling to the levels we have this year. We aren't even competitive.

Optics to who? Not many outside of Boone and/or alumni care about App State football enough to impact any future attendance, enrollment, or donations.rbarthle17 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2024 10:35 amI just don't see how they would decide to pull the trigger on a six figure buyout after 12/1 with things as they are in the area. Winning solves a lot of issues and perception. Not saying it ideal or right, but even SC was fired today, if the new coach goes 10-2 the next 3-4 years, most will be forgotten and we will hear all the "told ya so" comments

I would say true fans demand better and are never satisfied with average.
Sure, true fans stick around through good and bad, but just because they choose to demand better doesn’t make them bad fans.
So if someone cancels their season tickets, doesn’t mean they aren’t true fans.
Just my opinion.

Re: I am with you Coach Clark
I'm far from a fair-weathered fan, but if I have to sit through another 4 quarters of what I saw against South Alabama, I'll struggle to get motivated to take the 2.5 hour drive up the mountain. I mean I still will, but I'd completely understand the decision of others to not spend 4 figures on season tickets. Getting beaten down by a conference member, 2 weeks in a row, is much different than just losing. It's not fun at all for those of us who drag other people to these things, especially since this was supposed to be our year and we'd been spouting that all off-season. We're not competitive, at all, against even middle-of-the-pack teams.AppScott89 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2024 11:09 amI'm sure there is someone on the waiting list, who would be glad to take your tickets.

I'm an Orioles fan and have been since 2014, so I understand supporting teams through the absolute crap, but at least when that was happening there were things in motion that gave me hope to stay committed (hasn't paid off but still). I think IF this season doesn't turn around, if you stick with the same next year, you're giving the fan base a good reason to leave. That said, I hope Clark turns it around and wins 9 games this year.

Re: I am with you Coach Clark
I can understand that. However, we won 9 games last year and won our bowl game. Not what we would like overall..but not an extended period of like 5 losing record seasons in a row. If someone is bailing during the current season (if it ends up as a losing season), personally I see that as fair weather fandom. Just my opinion.KentHogan wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2024 11:49 amAppScott89 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2024 11:09 amI'm sure there is someone on the waiting list, who would be glad to take your tickets.

I am far from a fair weather fan appscott. Been coming since 2001 and attended years before that when I was in school. If you put garbage on the field like this year people will not show up. Most people drive close to 2 hours to get there every game. Its a waste of time and money. If clark is coach next year it will be the same old crap.

Yeah, I'll support Clark. I'll renew season tickets and support the collective and the program. It's deeper to me than then losing a couple games.

Re: I am with you Coach Clark
Not saying you are or are not a fair weather fan. However, you outline your years of fandom from around 2001-ish...years which App has only had one losing season (expectations were low given first year in Sunbelt)..so, you have really only seen the good times. Based upon how season is going given current record, we may potentially have a losing season... bailing due to one losing season seems like the epitome of being a fair weather fan..only on board when winning...boonetodd wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2024 12:37 pmI am far from a fair weather fan appscott. Re: I am with you Coach Clark
You give a great example. I've been a Braves fan since I was a little boy in the 90s. There's been excellent teams and garbage teams during that time, but all of those teams gave you something to root for and enjoy. If the team is putting a product on the field that you can be proud of and enjoy watching, win or lose, they're doing their job. That's why last year I wasn't on the "Fire Clark" train. It was still enjoyable to watch App State football because you could see the team getting better. This year, this team is bad. They play bad football that I don't enjoy spending my time watching.ArmantiWaterSafety wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2024 12:04 pmI'm far from a fair-weathered fan, but if I have to sit through another 4 quarters of what I saw against South Alabama, I'll struggle to get motivated to take the 2.5 hour drive up the mountain. I bleed black and gold, but I call it like I see it. App State football is not in a good place right now, and I think a coaching change is the best way to fix it.
