NBC needs to create a channel that is a g5 relegation league and Notre Dame coverage. IE (the golf channel)

MAC, SunBelt, AAC, PAC2, MWC. They need to pay up for "The League" .

"The League" would consist of a 10 team league that has some kind of relegation.

NBC could have the Notre Dame game plus 2 games from "The League". They also could have a Thursday and Friday game.

People would care and it could be promoted during Notre Dame games and Notre Dame could command games with any of the other teams. Notre Dame likes to play a national schedule.

I feel NBC could pull something like this off with not that big of a price tag. Maybe 1million for every team and 10 million for each team in "The League". They could give every other team not in the league the right to sell their games for whatever they could get for a game not picked up by NBC but NBC would have 1st right to the game.

If relegation began in college sports, corruption would go through the roof, any program involved would have to break away from the school as no taxpayer institution would be able to/want to, or be allowed to be a part of something that could devastated their revenue if they got relegated. Relegation in college sports would destroy it.

English soccer does not fall apart due to relegation. It might require contract language where everyone from coaches to players to staff take a pay cut if relegated to balance the budget.

If you are referring to a paid professional league then that isn't a good comparison. I am aware of the soccer leagues that use relegation. If you applied that to ncaaf and Nebraska got demoted then crap would hit the fan fast and lawsuits would commence. Corruption would run rampant as programs would do anything at all to not get demoted as that would mean lost revenue. It would not be as simple as it sounds and universities would never agree to it. There is way too much money involved and no one is going to give it up just because they had a bad couple seasons.

Nebraska would not agree to be apart of it. All G5s may not either. But if NBC could put up enough to make it worth while for a number of the good g5 programs, they have enough money to make it a go and a vested interest to somehow keep Notre Dame independent. Each regional conference would have a great goal to play for....our goals are still ahead of us would be to be relegated or to stay relegated. The winner of "the league" would be almost a guaranteed g5 champion spot and a champ of The League may be able to break the top 12. The CFP money could be split by the participants in some kind of motivating way. Just a thought. If they could pull off an East 12 and West 12 of "the league" The championship game would be worth some money as well because it would almost assure the G5 spot.

It would also keep conferences regional where they keep their NCAA Basketball credits and spot in the tournament.

This would be great! Kind of like The Champions League.

Let non-conference schedule feed through this.

This idea isn't too far afield from the idea of a private equity firm financing a G5 playoff. I really am not for any further separation of the FBS, but the realities of NIL, transfer portal, insane tv contracts and mega leagues may just force the issue.

If yall think having this slide under clack has been bad with fans and alumni, imagine how bad it would be if after that 6-6 season we had been relegated to a lesser league and lost money. I really don't think yall are considering all the ramifications of such a move. I truly hope they don't move towards a soccer style relegation. You think the transfer portal is bad now....wait until you get relegated and your WHOLE team transfers out to play for a winning program. You are halfway through a season and are 3-3 and your starters decide not to finish the season and risk injury or relegation and go ahead and enter the portal and be at their new school by spring. It would be a shit show like we've never seen.

I agree that if this actually happened the amount of cheating the system and buying players would escalate. I have reached a point where my reality meter says our chances for the CFP are more limited than ever. A G5 really needs to be like Boise or even Liberty and play in a conference with lesser competition overall. We can have 3 or legit good teams and beat up each other and have no chance. I’m also at a point where I’d be happy with a G5 playoff as well. Take the 4 G5 champs who aren’t the CFP winner and have a mini playoff and crown a champ so to speak. I’d rather see us play the MAC champ than the MW champ over a crappy bowl game.

Relegation is just what would happen to all of the non-autonomous schools. SMU took the deal with the ACC not to be left behind. The PAC-12 got left behind and it broke apart. The BIG-12 got left behind and it gutted the AAC and PAC-12. The same thing that always happens with all conferences since conferences began. They get too large and break apart. The Southern Conference was an attempt to improve upon the 28 teams of the SIAA to just 20. Then 10 years later the split from the Southern Conference was the formation of the SEC. Any time a conference gets too large, there is a self correction. Schools are going to do what is best for themselves. The entire point of moving up is to remain relevant. No school wants to move up just to be moved back down. Sort of like finally being able to live in a better neighborhood only to find out that you have moved into Love Canal. I believe that is what happened to Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Utah State, and San Diego State. To some extent that is what has happened to UCF, Cincinnati, BYU, and Houston. The only difference, the BIG-12 is still an Autonomous Conference. Luckily for us, Appalachian and Georgia Southern elevated the Sun Belt to be fifth or sixth best conference at the current time. If App were to join the ACC and all the BIG FOUR were not members it would not still be the ACC, just like the PAC-12 is no longer the PAC-12. Essentially, WSU and OSU were relegated...

If Bama gets relegated, they're not keeping their recruits and would open the door for much smaller programs to succeed and mainly BUILD a program from the bottom. Smaller schools getting the massive tv deals would be huge for a program. Just think if we even got the ACC money for a few years, we'd fix up our stadium in no time.

Schools and alumni would go broke trying to win, and if relegation happened, heads would roll at all levels. It would be a massive shit show. Massive. It would not be fair in the slightest and would be worse than the current system on fairness.

Im not saying it wouldn’t be wild but you would need a real commissioner, real contracts and enforcers of these rules for it to work. Transfer fees from one program to another (we honestly need that now) and many other things but it would be the fairest system possible rather than the shit we have now and trending to. It would be the only way that would give App and smaller schools a chance to grow their program that don’t come from a “big market.” Not saying it’s even possible but it’s much more likely in an open league rather than a closed league in which college football operates now.
