Next years starter will likely be someone I’ve never heard of who is playing at a lower level or riding the pine at one higher. It’s a year by year thing now.

He does but since this is already his 3rd school, what's to say he doesn't have a 4th one next year. Nobody knows in this new environment of college football.

That's certainly possible but one can assume he came here with an expectation of replacing Joey next season. I doubt he came with the thought that he would supplant him this year.

Sure, but nobody really knows what happens between now and next fall. Hopefully Billy is here and starts for us next year, but I am not banking on anything at this point.

I’m aware. And I saw him play multiple games last year.

I’ve been thinking the same thing. We are past building a program. We need to build a season. I think that applies to both coaches and players. I think we are really to the point of simply looking for the next hot shot offensive coordinator who wants to make a name for himself and hoping we might get 3 or 4 seasons out of him. I don’t like it at all but it is what it is. Find the next Drink and pay as many players as you can. It really sux.

Time to pour into Ely Hamrick. Keep him in-state. We're in his top 3 but he's a 2026.

Any insight on the freshman from Rock Hill, Wilson?

I wonder if our staff has thought of reaching out to the Western Carolina QB to gauge interest in any way?

I’m not worried about getting someone for next season. I’m sure that Frank will have his phone buzzing. (I almost said ringing off the hook) but they don’t do that anymore.

We have always made the most out of the overlooked. Kids that for whatever reason weren't courted by the elite and higher level programs. Or were recruited for positions they didn't want to play, wanted a better chance for playing time or just wanted to go to App. They usually played with heart, grit and a little chip on their shoulder. Like they had something to prove.

Money changes everything. I worry about the motivation of today's kids as much as the fact we can't compete on the money front regarding NIL. If you were young and understood only a fraction make it to the NFL, would you settle for a scholly and playing time or a scholly and a few thousand a month(or more)?

No idea where this all will go but we may find ourselves taking in transfers whose NIL deals magically evaporate or get reduced after a couple of seasons
If you’re really smart and have good people helping you, you go for the scholarship and the money. Imagine getting out of school with not only no debt but with say $100,000.00 in the bank. The things you could do. But you would have to be a really mature 20 year old.

I am a “would love to see the numbers guy”. I’d love to see raw data of guys who first, turned down a potentially great offer from a solid P5 and secondly accepted a ride the pine NIL offer to a P4 and then thirdly the amount this guy was paid. All that being said how many marginal (P4 type) kids are passing on offers to play at an App State and taking what is a relatively small amount of money (in the grand scheme of sports) to simply sit and watch? Even $100k is a lot of money to a 19 year old. I have no clue what mid range type players are pulling in.

If we keep winning, transfer portal QB's will continue to look our way. Going after HS Qb's almost seems like a waste of time. And I get coaching turnover and NIL/portal effect this but here it is...
Since 2019
2019- DBG (HS)- Quit ball/transferred. Conley (HS)- Flipped to Louisville
2020- Shuler (HS)- Transferred.
2021- Lowman, Tabscott- Both HS- Transferred. Brice (TP)
2022- Burger, Lowman- Transferred. Roszman- Decommited- All 3 HS recruits. McBride (TP-retired)
2023- Mchugh (HS)- Transferred. Aguilar- On Roster!
2024- Wilson and Wiles- On Roster! 1 HS recruit. Charles Wright (TP)- Quit
2025- Mahan and Niu- Decommitted. Both HS recruits

12 HS QB's committed/showed up to campus and not 1 other than Burger has taken a snap, and he took like 12 snaps. Very interesting.

Last QB we hit on from HS was Thomas in 2016, I believe. We really need to hit on a HS QB. It has been way too long.

I am not sure we do. With the portal, we may have access to kids with better talent that may not have worked out. If we can get the Chase Brice and Joey Dimes....we may not require the traditional mode of a high school. Would it be preferable so we have a 3 or 4 year starter, yes ..but not a requirement in the current state of CFB where kids can transfer without penalty.

play in the big 12 vs Iowa State, Kansas State, WVA, TCU, etc vs playing in SBC vs ODU, Marshall, CCU, GSU etc. Easy choice for most kids that have the option

How many schools have a straight up 3rd year Junior (signed out of high school) on their current roster? I’m willing to bet out of the 130ish D1 maybe 20 at most have this rare commodity
