Oregon NIL and an App fan promise

Unread post by appdaze » Thu Jul 11, 2024 2:16 pm

Phil Knight has handed over a blank check to buy a chip before he dies. It's a professional league now and nothing can prove that statement wrong.

So, my vow/promise as an Appalachian State alum and fan is that I will never again complain about the level of talent we have. We will get who we can get an that's it. I will still be critical of coaching calls, dumb plays by coaches and players, and maybe a few other things. But....I will never again complain about not getting enough talent because we will never compete with this, ever. I will go be happy and enjoy the games in all sports with who our school can afford to pay and hopefully stay in line with the Sunbelt...and that's it. Whoever suits up for us is awesome and will get my cheers, I will be entertained, and App will get my ticket money. App....State!

It won't matter in the least but I will not buy anything else from Nike. I do not have anything against NIL but my money will not support a company that uses profits in this purpose. I'm sure he'll just raise prices to show little difference in the bottom line.

I bet you are right.

More money does not mean more winning. Winning is hard. I imagine no matter what some teams can afford it will never be enough. I mean look at the Dallas Cowboys, how much would they have won over the years if they had had a different owner. If money were all it took to win the Yankee's should never lose a game.

I haven’t bought anything Nike in 20 years. This will keep me from breaking that habit.

I try not to buy Nike stuff but unfortunately some of the best looking App gear is Nike. I would love to see us go more to UA.

The contract with Nike is up in 2025. I’m not sure if we will renew or shop around. As long as it isn’t Adidas.

For my personal fitness clothes, I have moved to UA from Nike...However, the CEO of UA is a Maryland grad or affiliations with UMD. Since I live in the DC area, I have attended a few games. Have you seen those UMD uniforms?. Hideous!!🤣🤣.

No matter how much money you pay an 18-year-old. He's still an 18-year-old. You can't pay him to be any more than an adolescent trying to develop.

App has always developed players more than inhereting talent. Money can't buy that.

Thankfully, those kids that are in it for the money are easily identifiable and the red flags fly high. When the conversation starts with how much NIL is on the table, the coaches will typically move on to someone else.

Nike's children do make some of the best looking gear. I try to avoid it, but I do have some in my workout closet.

Nike's quality in many areas has fallen off a cliff over the last 10 years or so. However, the Air Pegasus running shoe and "Club Fleece" line of hoodies and sweatshirts just about can't be beat.
I do find it funny that everyone hates Nike. No matter your political, religious, or social affiliation, Nike has done something to piss off everyone.

I wonder if any of the big schools with big NIL are doing studies to determine actual ROI with these guys. Perhaps they don’t really care but my gut says that there are a whole bunch of 18-23 year olds cashing checks, buying jewelry and putting out a half ass effort on the field and in the classroom. There are absolutely probably exceptions but I really can’t see this as a sustainable model for “college athletics”. Agree with the above-
Look for the guy who is more about getting paid rather than playing for championships and move on.

The spirit of the game is being destroyed and quickly.

I still feel that in another couple seasons, at least for me it will no longer feel or look like college football.

I’m just trying to enjoy what’s left of the sport I love.

I think you will be right but I hope you’re not. But like you I have decided to enjoy it until I can’t. I also believe I can find other things to enjoy with my friends and family. I love going to the mountains during the fall and early winter. Maybe those trips become hiking and camping trips. Maybe I decide to see some other places. If it comes down to it I’ll find something else to do.

How do you measure the ROI is the question. Do you measure it in wins? If so, your ROI won’t be good with guys that are giving half-ass effort. Successful teams will have athletes that earn the playing time through effort and not with bank accounts larger than the GDP of Micronesia. I don’t think NIL is going to have the same positive effect on W/L’s as culture, coaching, and a team first attitude.

This is just a PR move..

You mean to tell me if the AD or head coach went to Mr Knight before they made this announcement and said "hey, if you give me a blank check, I can sign the top 35 players in the country" he wasn't going to do it?

No, it's always been an open book since it's been legal. Everyone is just talking about it now.

The statement above is how we have to go about it. We need to recruit kids that are pissed they didn't get offered the money and show them our strategy for getting them paid in the future. If we do our job you will get paid in a couple of years from a deeper pocketed program. That is the culture we need to develop here at App. You can't fault someone for taking real money if offered for the same service.....players or coaches!!!!!!!!!!

Theoretically if App brought in, say 25-30 chip on the shoulder didn’t get the bag (really good players) and they showed out and we won 10+ games then we lost them all the next season because they then got paid and we reloaded again with 25-30 new players with the same results. Under this odd scenario the average fan would never get to follow a huge chunk of our active roster more than a year- basically like watching a Triple A baseball team. If the offset to massive roster changes was consistent winning most fans would take it. The alternative would be rolling back recruiting to guys with little to no P5 interest and hope to get some diamonds in the rough and be content with 7-5 seasons.
