TIGMA NIL

Unread post by AppSt94 » Mon Mar 11, 2024 8:51 am

There is a new NIL initiative. I am hearing that there may be a kickoff event around the last spring practice.

What does this mean for the other collective? Does it still exist? Are there competing collectives now?

Both exist…serving different approaches and donor types.

I know this is more of a terrible coincidence than anything, but after the most painful basketball loss in a generation, the next App State Athletics thing I see is "open up those wallets App fans!"

Open the wallet or open the cheeks. Welcome to modern college athletics.

Gotcha. That seems... inefficient? But I don't have any money to give anyway, so it doesn't really matter to me.

Whatever discretionary funds I have to give are going to the school, not to pay salaries for athletes.

The latest NIL endeavor is attempting to include the average fan who might give $10 a month. Of course, they will accept larger contributions but it is designed to invite anyone who is interested to give. You don't have to be someone who has money to burn. I'm a retired teacher, so this is something I could likely swing.

I would say the success of our basketball team this year was due in part to NIL money.

NIL is a tough sell, but at one time our Yosef Club was a pretty tough sell. (still is to a lot of our fans). NIL is likely here to stay and breaking it in like this with the fanbase is the way to go.

Agree. The Yosef Club is still a pretty tough sell for some.

Our “ fan base” has always been tightfisted. We are going to have to bring in corporate sponsorships to move the needle.

1000% with you here. Our money already provides them an education, facilities, etc for them to be developed. It is not like we aren't helping the athletes. Instead of just helping 2-3, our money is being used to help ALL of them from the past, present, and future.

I think our players are thankful for our YC donations but if I ever get the idea that they aren't then I would just stop donating to YC as well. I don't have to donate to YC and attend games but I do it because I want to support our program.

If ALL boosters would take this stance it would put more pressure on our ADs and coaches to push for a TV revenue share, which is how players should get paid.

To me that is how these collectives should work. Don't be hitting up our average boosters for this. We should be approaching businesses who would like to use our athletes in true NIL. I am not contributing a dime for pay to play.

We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

Need improved degrees that lead to higher paying jobs. We’re a young FBS program and a growing University. Just need to grow it with the right degrees that lead to more income for alumni. Work in progress!

I’m not sure that would necessarily fix the problem. If we are talking about YC, we are talking about the scholarship fund and not overall donations. By comparison , in 2022, the athletic scholarship arm of the ECU Pirate Club raised $6.4 million. Outside of their medical school, I don’t know that their academic profile is much different. My point being that having higher yielding degrees may help, it’s not guaranteed. Based on student engagement at football, this club should have been growing by at least 250 new members a year for several years now. It just hasn’t.
