Re: 2024 Roster Updates
Development doesn’t equal coaching in all aspects. You can coach a guy hard, but until the lightbulb goes off, or the player puts in the necessary work to be consistent, they just won’t see the field. Sure we have whiffed in high school recruiting but breaking it down as to what happened brings in an element of dumb luck. Since Clark took over as HC and gave up OL coaching duties, we have signed 9 OL from 2020-2023. Essex and Presnell lasted a year for whatever reasons but neither were here long enough to be developed. Reeves was gone after a year or two. Same rationale could be applied. My understanding of Powers was that they found a degenerative hip issue that wasn’t going to allow him to play. Daley, Ramsey, Everett all developed into starters and Seth Williams provided depth. So that 4/9 saw the field.311neers wrote: ↑Tue Apr 02, 2024 9:01 pmSure he can land guys in the portal. But, we’re having to land guys in the portal because we haven’t developed many OL we’ve recruited out of high school. The lack of OL development has led to us transitioning DT/DL to play offensive line.ASUFan4863 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 02, 2024 8:28 pmEasy. Isaiah Helms, Bucky Williams, Jack Murphy, Damion Daley, Thornton Gentry.
As stated above, evaluating high school kids at OL is hard. You can like what you see but until they get on campus and face guys their own size, you just never know.

Re: 2024 Roster Updates
Most aspects of coaching at the FBS level are difficult, there are only 130 jobs available and you are competing against the best in your field.
Every fall the results are in the open for everyone to see. Our program has been one of the best the first decade of our FBS journey and 2024 should be another solid year.

McHugh has entered portal.
Going to maybe need another QB or promote Estep to Scholarship.

Re: 2024 Roster Updates
Hate to see another QB go and I get kids want to play...but the odds of it working out in the portal seem to be so slim.
If I was advising kids thinking about entering the portal I'd have them have something lined up before they leave the school their at.

Re: 2024 Roster Updates
We’ve got to have freed up some scholarships by now with spring portal entries. Anyone know where we’re at?

Re: 2024 Roster Updates
Filling our needs with more talented, developed, and mature players that wouldn't give us a look out of high school and rather than (hoping) developing them in the time you need them to contribute is another way to skin the cat. If we recruit a player that develops late and they are capable of shining in the P5 arena, we can't match the money they are leaving for as we have seen. As the rules or lack of rules has changed, I think the portal is a must to be competitive.311neers wrote: ↑Tue Apr 02, 2024 9:01 pmSure he can land guys in the portal. Re: 2024 Roster Updates
Are there positions G5 programs should no longer recruit out of HS or should we only allocate 2/3rds of the available scholarships to HS players going forward. For a period of time it seems the HS recruits outside of the top few hundred may get squeezed.

Re: 2024 Roster Updates
McHugh leaving is not really a surprise. He was recruited by a previous OC/QB coach and never really seemed to crack into a reserve roll. Add to that we pull in another more experienced QB from Texas in the transfer portal and I am sure McHugh saw the writing on the wall that his time at App would not include much if any time on the field. I was excited when we got him but now he is just another in a long line of QB recruits that didn't last in Boone.

Re: 2024 Roster Updates
The numbers have worked themselves out like I thought. I'm glad Shawn took more commits than he usually would have early in HS cycle because we would be under 80 if we had not. I am thinking we might see 2-3 more enter the portal as well.

Re: 2024 Roster Updates
That is what I heard. Best of luck to McHugh. My question is can we add a QB who is worth the scholarship with talent and knowing the offense if we take them in the summer? That is not a lot of time to learn it. I am hoping Wright or Wilson is going to be able to take reps so maybe we could use this spot for another lineman.

Re: 2024 Roster Updates
My understanding is that neither Wright nor McHugh has done much to give a great deal of confidence to their status as the backup.

Re: 2024 Roster Updates
It became obvious last year,as I stated then , you build a roster anew each season.
