There were times many teams would have kicked a FG I.e. inside the 35 when 3 points gets us within one score.

Let’s not pretend all of those 4th and shorts would have been called if we had more confidence in our kicker.

Averaging one attempt per game is pretty low.
Yep.

I disagree. I guess more data needs to be seen but where were the 4th and shorts. I would bet most were between the 30 and 50 yd lines. 45+ yard kicks vs 4th and short. I'm sure MOST college coaches would take the chance with the latter.

Now if you want to talk about maybe punting in some situations to pin them deep that's a different conversation. BUT then we must talk about that defense.

I think this is probably a trend at many schools...using analytics to make a decision to go for it versus kicking the FG. Teams are now using a philosophy of I got 3rd and 4th down to get first down at the time they are in 3rd down..the decision has already been made to go for it. The idea is that you are not giving that much field position if you are 35ish or so

Analytics are great, but attempting to extrapolate stats from other teams with other strengths and weaknesses is still an art not a science.

Analytics are not my favorite (i'm old and like the eye test but college kickers are not a gimme by any means) but the % of making it 4 and short vs 45 + yard FG's I would think is higher.

Show me. We missed three FGs last year, two were 50+. We didn’t take FGs.

I remember not converting a lot of 4th and shorts.

The only person that knows if we didn't attempt FGs due to lack of confidence in Hughes is Shawn Clark and he never indicated a lack of confidence. Could be true or could be a good job of showmanship. Either way, we don't know for sure.

Here ya go buddy

In fact, pro kickers have converted field goals at a rate at least 6.7 percentage points higher than in the best season for college kickers since 2014.

The good news for college kickers, however, is that — just like their pro counterparts — their accuracy typically improves as the season develops. So they probably won’t continue to be quite so bad all year long.

Here's another little nugget for you...

In the second half and overtime of one-possession games so far this year, Football Bowl Subdivision kickers are just 82-for-122 (67.2 percent), their worst success rate since 2011. Kickers are just 9-for-18 (50 percent) on field goal attempts taken in the final minute of regulation of such games, down significantly from the 66.9 percent average in the playoff era. And kickers have converted just five out of 10 go-ahead attempts in the final minute of regulation so far this season.

So it's not just a App St kicker thing.
Would ya look at that...75% now I'm not a rocket scientist but what is 9/12?

You don't even want to know what 40-50 yard % is. :D

App state was 50% conversion on 4th and 2. 72% on 4th and 1

Great stats, however…

You are conflating our kicking and 4th down offense with pro stats no wonder you’re confused.

Again using analytics for other teams, especially professional sports is a bad proxy for G5 football.

We would have kicked more if we had a reliable kicker at 40+.

First time i remember four kickers on roster. What is the status of Hughes? Is job
his or is there serious
competition?
After his performance last season, his job should be up for grabs.
Since his role is up for grabs, do you have talent and eligibility left, goapps :?: You could go back as a graduate student. Take that anyway you choose. :D :|

To offer a different perspective - perhaps we went for it so much because we had no confidence in our defense?

I stated that above as well, but Saint didn’t read that either. He just wants to be argumentative.

Nah, just enjoy nuances of game situations and personnel vs extrapolating pro and stats from Alabama.

I was letting it go…
