Great article about The GOAT.
I’ve hated the panthers ever since they screwed him over. After reading even more details… I hate them even more.

Re: Armanti Article
I'm not convinced AE was going to have some great NFL career, But he has the raw athletic ability to be a solid player in some capacity. The Panthers destroyed what could have been with their lack of development. He may have been better off going to Canada and then NFL but it's all what ifs anymore.

The Panthers treated AE as a novelity, never taking his abilities seriously. No App State player has much of a chance in Charlotte. All get cut and move elsewhere.

The irony is one of the main ones giving AE so much crap and likely a main cause of the dark period is the one who wrote this article..

Re: Armanti Article
Edwards would likely not have been a Pro Bowl QB or superstar but there is no doubt in my mind the OFFENSE GOAT Edwards would have been a solid pro and lasted more than 4 years in the NFL. He should have had a better career but Carolina had a stupid plan for him and hurt him by taking him too early so they could not really tuck him away on practice squad or back end of roster and developed him. I always felt he should have been a backup QB who was used as a WR in gadget plays as well, etc. Just like with Edwards, Dexter Jackson was hurt by the added pressure of being taken too high. Both of them should have gone in the 5th or 6th round range. Darrynton Evans was another who was taken too high and it has shown in the pros. I know we like to cheer on our players and are happy for them going as high as possible but the reality is that the NFL often drafts players too high and puts pressure on them that actually hurts the player.appstate24 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 12, 2023 9:41 amGreat article about The GOAT.

I was thinking the same thing. The media people often change their tune and just hope people forget what they said at first.AppStateNews wrote: ↑Wed Jul 12, 2023 11:35 amThe irony is one of the main ones giving AE so much crap and likely a main cause of the dark paid is the one who wrote this article..

Re: Armanti Article
I agree on AE but the other players we have had in Carolina were more just a bad fit. Jackson had track mentality and was just not tough enough to play WR in the NFL. People underestimate how tough it is to make it in the NFL. A lot of draft picks just don't pan out for every college team. MLB is even harder. We have had 49 players drafted in MLB and only 4 ever made it to the majors.appstate77 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 12, 2023 11:12 amThe Panthers treated AE as a novelity, never taking his abilities seriously. I think he could have lasted as a return man only but that could have only happened early on if he went late in the draft. I said when Gruden took him in round 2 that the clock was already ticking on Jackson because he was taken way too high and they were going to expect him to be a starting WR despite the fact he was nowhere near ready for it.
That is a big reason why I say Coakley is the GOAT because he lasted a decade and actually proved to be drafted too low. I don't think NFL is the only category to say a player is the GOAT but has to be a factor. People overlook this but for App the best players in NFL history are Mark Royals, Larry Hand, Coakley, Sam Martin, Daniel Kilgore, and John Settle.

Re: Armanti Article
Just my opinion, whether a player was good, great or terrible in the pros has absolutely no impact as to whether they were the GOAT in college. The GOAT, Armanti Edwards, was instrumental in helping App win two national titles... without him, probably not..that equates to GOAT in my book
If you want to have a category of App GOAT. "college and pros" fine. Whether a player is a good or great pro has zero impact on my evaluation of college only category GOAT.

You left out Dino Hackett who had a great career going with Kansas City until he developed Meniere's Syndrome (a severe inner ear condition).AppStFan1 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 12, 2023 1:13 pmI agree on AE but the other players we have had in Carolina were more just a bad fit. Re: Armanti Article
Really good article. I still have his #10 panthers jersey and always hated not seeing him under center. I’ve been a panthers fan since they came into the league but this has always left a bad taste in my mouth.

You said GOAT and not most impactful player. GOAT to me is who was the most dominant player on the field.BambooRdApp wrote: ↑Wed Jul 12, 2023 1:25 pmJust my opinion, whether a player was good, great or terrible in the pros has absolutely no impact as to whether they were the GOAT in college. I have to ask this because I have noticed that the answer depends on who someone says. Did you actually watch Coakley live in person? Were you in the stands at games or watched on TV when we were on? Everyone I know who was around in the 90s or before says Coakley but those who came around after 2005 all say Armanti. They also admit they only have seen stats and never watched Dex closely in college or pros.
Armanti is indeed the most impactful player we have had ever had. He was the QB when we won titles and beat Michigan. I don't think anyone can argue that. You have to consider NFL somewhat and I think those who discount it completely do so because their argument is hurt by it. Coakley not only made it but was among the top 5-10 LBs in the world for a decade. I think you also have to remember that while AE was the first two-time winner of the Payton, Coakley was the first two-time winner of a major award like that in I-AA/FCS history. He is still the only two-time Buck Buchanan winner. Both players are great and to me I try to separate and say Edwards is the GOAT on offense while Coakley is on defense.
Keep in mind that Armanti was huge in those wins but I think there is so much there beyond him. We had an AD change, offense changed, Jerry started to get out of some of his old ways, etc. If those things don't happen I don't think we win titles with or without Armanti.
Based on what you are saying you are giving bias to the QB position because it gets the most credit for wins since the QB touches the ball every play. I am truly to actually gauge who was the best player on the field and not just impact of the team results on the field. I try to judge all positions equally and say who the best player was. We are arguing over legends who were great at App regardless though. That era with Armanti had about a half dozen or so that I think you have to consider among our all-time greats for sure. Those teams were stacked and fast.

Higher (or would it be lower) on the list? Gettleman, Fox or everyone's favorite son on the Cabin, Eric Church?

Re: Armanti Article
So this is what it is like to have a decent local paper. I forgot what that was like after reading what Lee Enterprises has given me for the last 3 years
Spoiler Alert: I get a LOT of stuff from Winston-Salem and there has not been a Greensboro byline on a Greensboro business news article in about a year. I basically get the Winston-Salem Journal with a dash of Greensboro.

Re: Armanti Article
AE was a quarterback , he didn't get a shot to prove that he could play the position in the NFL.Maybe he could have .We will never know and that is a great shame.

Re: Armanti Article
FWIW, there was a huge controversy among members of this board who were on the old Delphi Forum's board as to whether Armanti or Trey Elder should have been the starting QB. Most said Trey.AppStFan1 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 12, 2023 3:53 pmYou said GOAT and not most impactful player.
