The end of college football "as we know it" - I guess one would have to define his/her definition of "as we know it" - College football will continue to be college football
You are right, if you look at college football over the last 50 years it has continued to change and will going forward. What about those days of schools keeping 125+ scholarships on their roster, it all changes good and bad over time. It just sucks when you are not at the top of the pecking order.

People confuse an entity changing even though its name stays the same.

The only constant is the powers that be continue grabbing more control and power each time that power is threatened.

We went from the 2007 Giant killing shocked the world greatest upset of all time program to the one who knocked off the Carolinas to the one who took down a crappy A&M (still a marquee win). We went from cute FCS to "big boy football " and except for that blip last year we were looking like a perennial top 40 (at least) national program. We have landed some nice players, a few of which have, are and will be playing in the NFL. Not too shabby.

Now if we don't pony up and pay some salaries we might get relegated to cute again. We should dig up those NIL threads from a few years ago where some people were all in favor of these poor kids being taken advantage of. I'm not against the idea totally but it's quickly getting ridiculous. When you hear announcers doing games refer to a guy's NIL deal it turns my stomach. I'd love to see a breakdown of player, his annual NIL and his grades. If a kid is legit attending class, is doing well and is contributing to the success of his sport and is helping to bring money in by all means give him some cash. I saw a whole bunch of NIL around some necks last night in the draft.

i still think App will adjust.... G5 will adjust.... AND most importantly, many players will leave APP to sit on the bench of a P5.... the grass isn't always greener in P5

I think the adjustment for G5 will be rough

If these players are now employees, they need to each be under contract with a buyout so when SEC teams come a poachin' we can at least get something that helps us fill the holes. How can G5's compete with schools that have 5X our budget?

They are technically not employees of the school. Boosters and companies are paying them, not the schools. If they become employees then we will certainly see a union in college sports and that would create way more problems. If that happens we will have to be in tier two because we can't play by same union rules that would be set for the P5s. Imagine the threat of a lockout in college sports. The reaction to that among fans and media would be an epic meltdown. One of the great things about college is you don't have to worry about a lockout or things like it but we are inching closer to that.

For one of you legal minds, if there is a coop that's paying the players to pay, is that employment? If it is, are they subject to labor laws, minimum wage, over-time and workers compensation?

Portal closes April 30. Needs to hurry up and get here!! And we need to go find some talent in it once the dust has settled. Bring that WV Mountaineer OLB Hybrid to the real Mountaineers to fill McLeod spot.

NIL should be a 1099 employee not a w2 employee.

Not a lawyer and did not stay at a Holiday Inn last night, but if you take NIL literally, I can't imagine a resulting injury requiring workers comp by just having your name, image or likeness used.
That being said, if there's lawyers involved anything can happen.

Would it still be on the school because the "NIL" money is not coming from App State?

Their name image and license isn't on anything. And we aren't paying them to go to class.

Imagine you decide to leave your job for a company that pays more. What kind of a crazy world would that be? It almost like we have a capitalist economy or something. The problem is that athletics are tied to academic institutions. We are one of, maybe the only one, in the world that ties athletics to academic institutions. It was never going to be successful in the long run with the ingenious farce of amateurism. I've said this a million times now that eventually athletics will have to break from the schools and become their own entities or die out. There is too much money involved and eventually the players will become employees as they should. They should get paid for their labor like any other labor force. We are just unlucky in that we are a middle sized sports program. It's no different than being a middle sized store chain competing with Walmart. I hate it for us I really do, but it's the nature of the beast. Enjoy the ride while we still have a wave.

This one does hurt. McLeod was more than a pass rusher when he was on the field. He was active and involved in plays all over the field.

Interesting that he isn’t showing in the portal based on 24/7 and ON3.

Agree on the 1099 - interesting quagmire - athlete on scholarship and self employed - even though it is NIL - it is still employment. I still believe the school - at least for now would take care of the athlete. This could change in the future -who knows.

To be more factual - a 1099 is an Independent Contractor - not an employee.
