The motivation to prove to yourself and SoCal, Auburn and Louisville that you were overlooked is strong.

Re: Another Portal Loss and Portal Discussion
Not writing anyone of them off. As I said, I’m taking a wait and see approach on their roles to the team and unit. They may be in the rotation this year, they may be long term contributors, or they could be guys that are here to push the guys in front of them to focus and work harder. Don’t know yet. Burgess is still young and likely developing. Langlo needs to put back on some weight but he might be the most likely one of the three to factor into the 8 man rotation. My point is that their size and transferring from a P5 aren’t locks to be counted upon on Saturdays.JTApps1 wrote: ↑Sun May 05, 2024 8:02 pmDon't write them off either. Gentry and Scroggs had virtually no experience coming in last year and are both set to start this year. Same goes for Schrader who came in earlier this year. I know they're not as big as these three, but experience wise they're equal.AppSt94 wrote: ↑Sun May 05, 2024 6:15 amI’ll take a wait and see approach on all of these guys. One would hope that the staff wouldn’t take someone if they didn’t feel like they could perform in the scheme. I get that they are shiny new toys from P5 programs but what’s in the name on the back of the jersey that should level set expectations, if you are in to that sort of thing. One guy is a freshman that played 1 game last year. 1 guy had promise but sat out last year. 1 guy spent 4 years in the program and played 1 game. Are they starters or are they depth pieces, we will see.

There are no guarantees but as we have discussed, we need help there and the staff is taking action. I’m hopeful.

Re: Another Portal Loss and Portal Discussion
I’m glad we’ve adapted and gone after P5 backups while still pursuing the best of the lower division. Not everyone can start at a NCState FSU or Georgia. Find the guys with the chips on their shoulders at the P5 level. I mean, Scroggs was sitting behind 2 First round draft picks, just needed a chance. Gentry was buried too. They’ll be great for us.JTApps1 wrote: ↑Sun May 05, 2024 8:02 pmDon't write them off either. Gentry and Scroggs had virtually no experience coming in last year and are both set to start this year. Glad he's playing closer to home this season. Definitely needed this depth.

Landing Donald is nothing short of a coup for App. Ratchets up the competition at NT, builds depth and gets this young man closer to home. And poaching him from a conference foe doesn't feel too bad, either.

Definitely allows for a more dispersed workload between Clark, Hertz and Donald.Black Saturday wrote: ↑Mon May 06, 2024 3:55 pmGlad he's playing closer to home this season. Definitely needed this depth.

Re: Another Portal Loss and Portal Discussion
I've been really impressed with the players we've picked up in the portal. It appears we've addressed our needs, picked up some guys that were targets in HS and filled in some depth.
It will take time to see if these guys are legit but at face value I'm pretty excited for this coming season.

Re: Another Portal Loss and Portal Discussion
I feel pretty good about the season as well. I will be curious to see where the preseason magazines put us with all of these pickups. Not that it matters but just to give an idea of what the coaches might pick and what we could expect compared to the rest of the Sun Belt. I do expect us to be the favorite simply due to the fact we did not lose any high impact players from last year, we return Joey, and we added pieces to the OL and DL.kornegaylw wrote: ↑Mon May 06, 2024 6:43 pmI've been really impressed with the players we've picked up in the portal.
