I don’t think that is ever happening. I think this second hire can be a good one. He knows Sloan’s system well and he loves App State.boonetown1 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 02, 2023 7:04 pmI would love for the other to be braswell but I know that is a long shot.

Re: New Coach hire
All fair points and I bet the upside is huge. More curious than anything. But, most of all I just want this next year to be a huge bounce back year for the team and all involved. They deserve it and our opponents deserve to get a taste of it. Clicking on all cylinders would be fantastic! Loved AJ as a player and he has a great story to tell and instill in the players for sure.AppSt94 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 03, 2023 9:03 amLook at this way. He was a talent scout for the NFL. He played in the NFL. He understands the skill sets needed to play the game correctly. He is well regarded as a student of the game. Does all that qualify him to be a coach? Not necessarily. His pedigree will allow him to be relatable to his players.

Re: New Coach hire
He played for Sloan, so one has to believe he knows his ability and wouldn't have likely signed off on him otherwise. Nonetheless, if AJ were not an App guy, I suspect folks would really be critical of this hire. No reason to pass judgment until he has a chance to prove himself but despite his background, he is coaching a position that he has neither played nor coached.AppSt94 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 03, 2023 9:03 amLook at this way. Re: New Coach hire
AJ has coached OLBs in this system... he's not cutting his teeth with us. This is not his first coaching stop.
Also, the last time we had a new guy with minimal experience coaching his position, it was heavily talked about and many thought it was a terrible decision. His name has been mentioned in this thread about wanting him back...

Which is what sparked my original post of being interested in his experience coaching OLBs. Appreciate the additional clarification. Glad he has experience at the position. Never doubted his ability to connect and communicate the App mentality. Excited to see what he does in the role.

Re: New Coach hire
He was a grad assistant for one year at Louisville. Did he help with linebackers? Let's not overestimate his experience. He will have a chance to prove himself and I trust that Sloan would not have gone in his direction if he didn't think he was up to the job.AppStateNews wrote: ↑Fri Feb 03, 2023 10:03 amAJ has coached OLBs in this system... he's not cutting his teeth with us. Re: New Coach hire
Yes, he helped with LBs at Louisville (among other positions). He also could have told you what each position is supposed to do on any occasion while he was a player here -- offense, defense, or special teams. His football mind is off the charts.hapapp wrote: ↑Fri Feb 03, 2023 10:13 amHe was a grad assistant for one year at Louisville. Did he help with linebackers? Let's not overestimate his experience. Now, can he coach? That is to be seen, but I like the hire.

I’ve heard the same. I heard from many people long before this hire was made, that AJ’s football IQ is through the roof. Excited for him, and this hire.AppStateNews wrote: ↑Fri Feb 03, 2023 10:25 amYes, he helped with LBs at Louisville (among other positions). Re: New Coach hire
Yup. It's his IQ that kept him on practice team rosters as long as he was. His physical tool set isn't exactly ideal for an NFL player (especially his position), but his IQ made up for it.appstate24 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 03, 2023 10:35 amI’ve heard the same. Re: New Coach hire
Very true. As a prospect athletically he was really a camp body or tryout player but so smart he was able to latch on practice squads some. He wasn’t as physically talented as Doug Middleton or Josh Thomas but his football IQ kept him around a little bit and got him a scouting job.AppStateNews wrote: ↑Fri Feb 03, 2023 11:07 amYup. Re: New LB Coach(es) hire
Having NFL alums on staff has value in and of itself .Based on that and the above I thinking the potential upside to be substantial.

Bringing this back up... we could see some changes with the U hiring away Cincy's LB coach...

Going back to my question, the LB coach that went to Miami coached ILB. So I’m assuming Cunningham might be in the running for the job at Cincy. We shall see, but I was hoping to see that mean mustache on the sidelines at KBS.
