Re: Sloan hired for DC
This is a great hire. Sloan designed and implemented our red zone defense during the Woody years. He knows and understands this defense better than anybody not named Nate Woody.
Now, it's time to see what he can do different with the same puzzle pieces Dale Jones had.
Oh, and btw, this was done right after Army/Navy game but kept in hush out of respect for Sloan.
Sorry, I keep editing: Another plus -- Mrs. Sloan LOVES Boone.

GREAT hire
probably best case scenario outside of Nate Woody, or Brown / Ivey from Louisville/Cincy at App
Top notch recruiter in addition to his experience with our successful defenses under Satt/Woody

Great coach who knows our system extremely well. Excellent recruiter, plugged into the Georgia market where we get so many outstanding players. This is as close to a seemless hire as we could hope for.

Re: Sloan hired for DC
To me the best defenses are the ones with a solid and fast front 7. Even if the secondary is weaker or less experienced the ability to apply pressure from the front 7 takes the strain off the back. I recall that great 2015 Panther season (until the end) where the defensive line and linebackers were so good they literally brought a few guys in off the street in December and kept rolling. Our defenses several years ago were fast sideline to sideline and we overcame some size deficiencies.

Re: Sloan hired for DC
I guess this means App is keeping the 3-4. It also likely limited the pool of coaches.
I'm baffled as to why it took this long to announce if it was done for a while.

Re: Sloan hired for DC
Wish Sloan the best and will be pulling for his success.
If I'm being honest though it isn't exciting news.
But my feelings in January aren't important, him recruiting and retaining the right young men and growing them is what counts. Good luck Coach and welcome back.

Re: Sloan hired for DC
To add to your statement of this being a great hire; he is a helluva recruiter with strong ties to Georgia.AppStateNews wrote: ↑Fri Jan 13, 2023 10:11 amThis is a great hire. Just curious why you aren't a fan of this hire? Just because it's another retread? I completely get that aspect of it...Saint3333 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 13, 2023 10:56 amWish Sloan the best and will be pulling for his success.

Re: Sloan hired for DC
Is there a reason we shouldn't be hyped for this hire? He's an App guy AND he's had proven success everywhere he has been, all on top of being a great recruiter. I like this hire a lot. Hopefully he sticks around a while.

Re: Sloan hired for DC
Maybe it's too soon but when Barbay took the Miss State job the story appeared on ESPN. Sloan hired as DC, nada.

Re: Sloan hired for DC
I made a joke the other day that we probably hired someone December 19th and that the 247 article would show that backdated date. Kept it quiet for a whole month, crazy. They like keeping us on our toes!
Probably hired an OC in December as well. Won't find out until March...kidding.
