Missouri
Eli Drinkwitz 17-19 Missouri has earned three straight bowl bids and finished in the top four of the SEC East every season that Drinkwitz has served. He has also delivered enough recruiting wins, and some of the 2022 losses include strong performances against good teams. Half of the Tigers' regular season losses came to teams who went on to play in New Years' Six bowl games, including a four-point defeat to eventual national champion Georgia. It was a feisty team in 2022 and forecasts as a competitive program moving forward. C+

App. St.
Shawn Clark 26-13 Clark has put in work at his alma mater with the highlight being a 10-win season and Sun Belt Championship Game appearance in 2021. Last season was disappointing for a program that has maintained a championship-contending standard for much of its Sun Belt tenure, but even in that campaign, Clark delivered a road win against Texas A&M and an epic home victory against eventual conference champion Troy in a September to remember for fans in Boone, North Carolina. B feels a bit high. C+ or C seems reasonable.
This is my very generic signature added to each post.

If we had flipped one of those L's and made it to the nobody cares bowl then I think we could talk about a B-..... But we didn't so yea I agree no higher than a C. That B they gave is just for the flashy televised wins from Tammy and Troy and the almost from UNC. I think the main thing we can take out of this is the importance of quality non conference televised games improving our national brand.

C at the very best, I'd lean toward C-. No way it's in the B range.

Re: CBS Sports rates 3rd year head coaches
We basically went 4-6 (remove the scrimmage games against CID and Bob Morris). It took zero preparation from our head coach for those two games. A win is a win and the Troy miracle is what it is. By the end of the season the A&M win was still great all things considered but the shine wore off each week. I still believe that we were an 8-4 team and we all know that we gave away those two wins- JMU and pick one between Stink, CCU and Marshall. The god awful display at Texas State was simply a loss from the get go. A grade of C- is about right.

Clark would probably give himself a C or worse. Get better this off-season. Positive moves thus far overall.

Re: CBS Sports rates 3rd year head coaches
Let's compare to top two G5 3rd year guys. Both had programs in top 25 under their reign.
San Diego St - Brady Hoke (36-24) - A-
Things appear to be moving according to plan for the Aztecs, who have maintained their identity through the coaching change and finished in the top two of the Western Division in the Mountain West in each of the two full seasons that Hoke has been back as head coach. He's got a 23-15 record overall against Mountain West opponents and already delivered a 12-win season in 2021 that included a division title and a ranking (No. 25) in the final AP Top 25. A four-point loss on the road at Fresno State and a 13-3 defeat to Air Force kept the Aztecs from being in conference title contention again, but the program remains one of the most consistent in the conference.
My additional info - 2020 (4-4), 2021 (12-2), 2022 (7-6). He had ONE good year so he is inconsistent. SDSU had 10+ seasons in 4 of 5 yrs prior to his tenure.
UTSA - Jeff Traylor (30-10) - A
This is the coach who has achieved the most of any one in this cycle. It's not just the 30 wins and two conference championships, but the fact that he's accomplished all this at a program that just entered Division I competition in 2011. Traylor is responsible for the only conference championships in UTSA football history and three of the program's four bowl appearances. As UTSA makes its move to the American Athletic Conference, it does so with the expectations that it can continue that level of championship contention despite the level up in competition.
My additional info - program is going up under Traylor, 2020 (7-5), 2021 (12-2), 2022 (11-3). In years prior to his tenure program had 1 winning season in previous 6 yrs. Clearly he had to build up program.

Some of you guys are so scope-locked on the '22 season you overlook this was a 3 year overview - 2020 (9-3) 2021 (10-4) --- but, hey, don't consider those because the 2022 season turned App State into a mediocre program whose coach is on the hot-seat or should have been fired ---------

I considered the three year period. If I were just grading this past year, it would have been a D or D-.WVAPPeer wrote: ↑Thu Jan 26, 2023 10:29 amSome of you guys are so scope-locked on the '22 season you overlook this was a 3 year overview - 2020 (9-3) 2021 (10-4) --- but, hey, don't consider those because the 2022 season turned App State into a mediocre program whose coach is on the hot-seat or should have been fired ---------

Re: CBS Sports rates 3rd year head coaches
2020 Covid year- hard to grade anyone considering everything teams faced. It was so F'd up grades need to be an incomplete but if it's required I'd say B+.
2021- whipped ECU, should have beaten Miami who turned out to stink. Good decisive wins but 2 eggs laid against La and the ass whipping in the bowl game- I'd go with a C-
2022- horrible loss at Texas State and obviously we gave away JMU and should have won at Stink and Marshall. I'd go with a D.
Overall for the 3 seasons a C is about right. We beat some crap teams and handled the bottom dwellers of the Belt. Last year the level of competition increased but we didn't.

So BigDaddy I just want to make sure I got this correct - a 10-4 record is C- ?

Re: CBS Sports rates 3rd year head coaches
Good point my bad. Probably closer to a B or B- due to the roster available which was loaded with super seniors. Grading is really so subjective and there are lots of variables. If I were the sole person asked to grade I would actually beg out of the job.

Re: CBS Sports rates 3rd year head coaches
I’m looking at 3 years, 2 of which App didn’t win the division. 1 of which they went 4-6 against FBS competition. Blown out in a bowl game. Blown out in Lafayette by ULL in ‘21, followed up in the CCG with an anemic offensive performance.WVAPPeer wrote: ↑Thu Jan 26, 2023 10:29 amSome of you guys are so scope-locked on the '22 season you overlook this was a 3 year overview - 2020 (9-3) 2021 (10-4) --- but, hey, don't consider those because the 2022 season turned App State into a mediocre program whose coach is on the hot-seat or should have been fired ---------
I’m not under the illusion given App’s resources that they should operate at a Bama type level, but facts are facts, Clark hasn’t had this program operating up to the standard this program has established. I know for a fact Shawn Clark will be the first to admit that. But y’all get all bent out of shape when anyone else says it.

Re: CBS Sports rates 3rd year head coaches
I have had a roller coaster opinion of Shawn, but putting everything into perspective, I would feel comfortable giving him a B. I do believe he has improved the foundation of the program. That doesn’t always equate to wins but the groundwork is being laid to get back to the championship ways which I hope we can all appreciate and see. He made some bad hires early on but has improved imo. He has improved in recruiting, player accountability, roster management and class breakdowns. He has kept a strong culture despite a bad season. If we struggle again this year, my grade and opinion will change but I am optimistically satisfied at the moment.

Re: CBS Sports rates 3rd year head coaches
He has (on paper) the staff to make some good stuff happen next season. If he gets us back to about 9-3, contend for the conference and go back to a bowl that would be great and pull up the 4 year run to no worse than a solid B if not a little better. This year was just not where anyone wanted to be but it happens. Move forward.

Re: CBS Sports rates 3rd year head coaches
I would agree with a B for 2021 / and with a B or B- for the 3 years only because last season was so inconsistent
I'm not sure where anything lower than B- is appropriate for the 3 year period - basically those are saying that APP was an average/mediocre team over that 3 year period - That just is not understandable

Re: CBS Sports rates 3rd year head coaches
I am considering the 3 yr period. I didn't give a grade but my observation is we are on a downward trend. However, that being said, I also recognize there are some hidden issues that SC has be dealing with. I do like what I have seen thus far in off-season with staff modifications. I believe that will set him up for some positive progress in the upcoming season.WVAPPeer wrote: ↑Thu Jan 26, 2023 12:02 pmI would agree with a B for 2021 / and with a B or B- for the 3 years only because last season was so inconsistent

Re: CBS Sports rates 3rd year head coaches
Based on my perception of where we should be makes hard for me to take the losses from the get go unless we are playing Alabama or Georgia types, not Georgia Southern, Louisiana, CCU, and Texas St.bigdaddyg wrote: ↑Thu Jan 26, 2023 6:51 amWe basically went 4-6 (remove the scrimmage games against CID and Bob Morris).
