Most legendary players that played at KBS?

Unread post by CornCobPipes » Tue Feb 21, 2023 12:24 am

Cast your votes for most legendary players to suit up and play at KBS all time. Legendary can fit your own definitions but I am going with the NFL standard and with that said, my pick for the home team is LB -Dexter Coakley. For the opponent...my pick is HOF WR - Randy Moss.
KICK ASS!!!

Home team: P - Sam Martin (semi-serious, he's had a great NFL career and it was fun watching him boom punts)
Opponent: No idea

I give Moss the edge over TO. In part based on their pro careers, but also, I don't think anyone knew TO would be what he became in the NFL, but everyone knew what Moss was before he ever got to Marshall.

For us, I can't go with anyone but Armanti. I know others had better pro careers, but he's not only the App GOAT, he's at least got a spot in college football history for leading the Michigan win.

I have to say Dexter for the home team. What he did on defense was at least as impressive (if not more) than what AE did on offense AND Dexter had a monstrous NFL career on top of his dominating App State career. Dexter is still the only multiple year winner of the Buck Buchannan award and a multiple time pro bowler and was App State's FIRST inductee into the College Football Hall of Fame. NOBODY else to wear the Black and Gold can say those things and that is why he is the best to wear the black and gold. As for the away team, really hard to argue against Moss but TO is a close second.

This is a good topic for discussion.....I like all these comments. I still stick with my original opening thread comment.....but after reading and thinking I would like to add the element of just the college level at App.....I would take Armanti Edwards over Dexter Coakley.

For those who never saw Dexter Coakley play at App, he was an absolute stud and proved that in the NFL. He won the first TWO Buck Buchanan awards (the defensive equivalent of the Walter Payton award). No one else has won two. I think he and Armanti are in a dead heat.

Single game category. Richie when he went like 45 for 48 and the Villanova Dude in the playoff game.

Dino Hackett...vs every offense he faced. He would have had a long NFL career had he not developed Meniere's disease (an extreme syndrome with loss of hearing and inner ear manifestations). I had it in my mid twenties. Left me deaf in my right ear. Fortunately the dizziness went away after a few years. It's a lifelong syndrome.

His claim to fame was carrying an axe on a float in a player "walk out" "
He was a 2nd round Draft Pick.

I was a senior the year Dino got drafted. I still recall watching his short interview when he got picked. He said "I like to hit people "

I think he was 40 for 45 with 28 straight completions against Furman in 2004. At one time it was the NCAA record for consecutive completions in a game.

True story, I was at that game with my neighbor who's daughters were cheerleaders for Furman. I sat in the Furman section and much to the dismay of my wife, kept needling the Furman fans around me (nothing derogatory). When they went ahead at the end of the game and old timer in front of me turned around and said "we left Richie too much time on the clock", and sure enough he made them pay. In 2004 we struggled on defense and with our running game, won all our home games and lost all our away games. We had just installed a new offense called the spread and there was a lot of debate as to whether Jerry would use it the next year. Richie's performance was one of the best I've seen in person.

Had a class with Dexter. As good of a player as he was he was equally as nice of a person. Proud to have him as a Mountaineer.
