Football/Basketball Are we better now than we were 4 years ago? (Honest question)

Since it’s the end of the year, seems like a good time to reflect on the state of Football and Basketball.

I’m answering this in terms of program instead of W/L. Our football brand has never been better. It was a down year but the outside world doesn’t care about that. They see us on Sportscenter, commercials and now recognize us. Because of that I say YES to football.

Basketball I say no. We are going the opposite direction in terms of brand. We try to post on social media and then quit when the games don’t go our way. We didn’t tweet at all the whole second half during the Marshall game. This is pathetic and doesn’t show a desire to build a brand or seats.

I would say we are much better off with both programs. No one in our lifetime has ever had to deal with a pandemic, I think we had the right coaches to deal with the pandemic. To say that our basketball program is not better off than it was four years ago is lunacy. Four years ago, we had only been to the big dance twice before. Think about this, during the Spanish Flu pandemic App had not been a school for twenty years and it survived. Appalachian's football brand is as strong as it ever has been and will continue to get stronger and stronger.

Football - The issues that we are judging the football program today started four years ago. So in a way, it is not better, but has the looks of a blip and not a trend.

Basketball- I think it is better. Excitement and interest is building.

The answer for football is obviously no.

For basketball, it remains to be seen how good this year's team will be. Certainly the previous three seasons were better than any of the recent ones that preceded them.

It’s not about having “rose-colored” glasses. It’s about understanding why this year happened, what caused it, and what is being done to fix it. Do I expect a 9 win season next year? Probably not going to happen. My point is that 6-6 didn’t occur over night. It was years in the making.

If we are talking 2019 Clemson won the championship and finished 11-3 this year with a whopping in their bowl game. Alabama had 2 losses and didn't play in their CCG. Oklahoma went 6-7 this year. All of those teams appear worse off than they were in 2019. UNC basketball is 9-5- on a decline?

It's really tough to simply maintain excellence every single year. I raised the question many months ago asking what would happen if god forbid we didn't win 10 football games much less go 6-6? Well all hell has broken loose for some.

This Twitter kerfuffle where App Athletics won't post if MBB loses is pathetic.
Win or lose, you post the results. App is better than that.

If App probably isn't in a position to win 9 games next year then you're answer to the question asked should be NO.

Thanks but I can form my own opinion. We were in position to win 11 games last year and went 6-5, so sure. By the way, it’s “your.”

When you resort to correct spelling I know you've lost the debate.

You were attempting to hedge your response in the first post and got caught later. Sorry but your logic doesn't support your initial assertion or lack thereof.

We went 6-6 if we're getting nit picky with semantics. Point remains.

We are better and our scheduling is better. Most noticeably in Football but in basketball as well. It's what we asked for knowing that results would not always be as good. We don't play Furman (who suck), Western, Citadel, Elon and VMI anymore. We play peer universities.

Sounds like the university has advanced quicker than some of it's fans though.

Are we talking 4 years ago or 10 years ago now? I agree if over a longer period.
