How does the Portal impact HS recruiting?

Unread post by Saint3333 » Tue Dec 06, 2022 1:52 pm

Does this trickle down to high school recruiting? Alabama had nine players enter the portal yesterday. That's more scholarships for them to offer this class, with the NCAA lifting the 25 scholarships per class limit we could see an unprecedented number of decommits as player rise up on schools boards.

OR they just dip into the portal themselves. Likely a combo of each.

I mean, you're seeing that even at App. We have 8-9 guys in it right now. Apparently we graduate +-25 kids. So theoritically we lose 30-35 kids this year. We only have 14 kids committed right now for HS recruting so that leaves us potentially to go find 20 more kids whether its portal, juco or HS I am not sure. To find 20 kids in a short few months before spring ball seems like a ton! I would think most of that 20 number is going to come from the Portal/Juco as most HS are done playing and most kids are committed that are good players.

Maybe it’s a blessing the coaches aren’t having to prepare for a bowl game.

Thought about that the other day. Between portal kids and opt outs, I bet Bama will be down 20 players for their bowl game...

That too, but I was thinking more that the coaches could focus on recruiting and filling those spots.

Maybe some players we recruited and were close on but went to other schools have entered the portal and we can reconnect with them. Relationships already established if we are still interested. Things change. Anyone know of anyone offhand?

Considering that many schools (especially our peers) are dealing with the same roster issues to have to spend a couple of weeks preparing for the Nacho Cheese Birmingham Bowl seems almost an act of futility. The average mid level school loses money to go to these games, there might be 20k in attendance and rosters are in flux.

I think the TP impacts the juco ranks more than HS.

In the past, you could use a spot to take a kid that might be a bit of a fringe player/project. The portal allows you fill that spot with a transfer if you wish.

If harvested right the portal will allow us to get a caliber of player that would not even look at our program a sniff coming out of high school.

Portal more important than hs recruiting. You at least have college film on a portal guy.
