That's based on tickets sold, not actually butts in the seats, right? Or am I outdated in that method?

Yes

No joke, I bet Georgia Southern would see their attendance rise a good bit if they started playing all their games on Thursdays. Too many Southern students, graduates, and fans are too busy watching UGA on Saturday's to make it to Paulson.

Also interesting that, out of the top half, really only JMU and Troy had genuinely good seasons. App was worse than usual, Southern Miss was better than they have been lately, and Marshall is just sort of staying steady with 8 wins. ODU and Texas State were bad.

I wonder how many teams would be at this level if there was an actual requirement to be at a minimum of 25k in ticket sales (guess it would have to be sales since butts don't matter). How many MAC teams exceed that mark? You might see 40 schools get relegated to FCS.

Wonder what Coastal’s will be once Chadwell goes to Tampa and McCall leaves?

UL’s tickets plummeted in their first season after Napier left.

Louisiana doesn't exactly kill it in ticket sales in general. Looking at 2021, they had one game over 30k (the championship against us) and one game near 30k (28k for their homecoming). The rest of their home games were 16-24k, so there was already some squishiness in their fan support.

And then they proceeded to have a pretty sad season. Not as bad as ours, but losing to ULM, Rice, etc. had to hurt. Late in the season their attendance was down to 11k.

We're lucky to have fans that are a little hardier, but we have had the luxury of many winning seasons. Louisiana was consistently bad prior to 2011, and then had 22 wins vacated for NCAA violations between 2011 and 2014. Napier didn't really get them going until 2019.

The set up of their stadium probably has a lot to do it with it...there is ZERO shade, amenities or comfort.

I don't think the requirement has ever been 25K. The minimum "required" attendance is 15K but it never has been enforced. I don't think the MAC meets even that.

Just for comparison, I checked Wake's attendance for this season. They averaged 30,053 at home which included Clemson & UNC...

Yeah I knew it was lower and not enforced but I was just thinking if the minimum was only 25k how many teams would not make it? Even the ones who have around 15k would have to pony up for a bunch of prepaid aluminum. Wasn't attendance a hard requirement way back? I always thought that was one of the main reasons App was dropped to FCS.

It was a hard requirement as far as attendance and stadium size when Div I split into I-AA and I-A

App wasn't dropped to FCS (I-AA). The SoCon opted to drop down. It's true that attendance would have been a hurdle back then because we were nowhere near the 15K requirement. Conrad Stadium (now Kidd Brewer) was also way below requirements. If the requirement were put at 25K, App wouldn't have made it until the past few years. That would definitely chop down the size of FBS

Do all schools report attendance the same way? I know App does tickets sold and not butts in seats, but is that the case for all other schools?

We could have dropped out of the SoCon like ECU did but we didn't meet the minimums

South Alabama, Louisiana and Coastal have embarrassing numbers given their recent success.

i thought the Ivy, Southland, and SoCon all sued to not be forced to I-AA, which is why there was the 3 year delay in the start of the split and the eventually move for all three conferences.
