I love we are going after JuCo guys. We need guys that have a chip on their shoulder. Our program is built on the backs of players like that. 2 years of maturity, student-athlete life, S&C seems like an upgrade over most 18 year olds. Obviously we will only a few JuCo guys but those will be the people expected to play right away.

It’s generally not gen ed credits that fail to transfer.

The JuCo guys transfer in with an associates degree. As someone who went to community college, that is the only way to ensure you keep your credits. It is a smart workaround given the UNC system hinderances.

JuCo

Someone mentioned signing a ton of JuCo and portal players. Portal yes, but Juco? There aren't many Junior Colleges fielding football left except for a few community colleges out west. So JuCo... no Portal...hopefully.
I doubt we have more than a couple JuCo's on our present roster. May be wrong...wouldn't be the first time.
You're right that there aren't many junior colleges left with football programs. However, there's a long list of JuCo players who have transferred to D1 football and been successful. There's a decent amount of JuCo players who are there because they didn't get picked up in the transfer portal, didn't have the grades at their previous school, etc. Have you watched Last Chance U on Netflix. It's an interesting look into the world of JuCo football.
When Jerry Moore started his App tenure, he mined the Juco's for offensive linemen. There were a lot of players who finished their last two years in Boone.

A bit of raw data to aid this discussion:

Where App State finished nationally out of 131 teams:

Total offense: 26th best in the country
Rushing offense: 21st
Passing offense: 47th
Sacks allowed: 34th
Passes had intercepted: 19th

Third-down conversions: 78th
Fourth-down conversions: 72nd

Total defense: 35th best in the country
Rushing defense: 36th
Passing defense: 60th
Sacks: 46th
Interceptions: 94th

Third-down conversion stops: 101th
Fourth-down conversion stops: 62nd

Penalties: 48th

Turnover margin: 12th
Stats are skewed playing two lower level FCS opponents. 3rd down conversions (on both sides) are obvious, but the interceptions are also a HUGE dropoff from our prior five year average when we were top 5 cumulatively.
But, we made up for that with fumble recoveries. In 2021, we had 15 INT's and 7 Fumble Recoveries. This year we had 7 INT's and 13 Fumble Recoveries. Only three of the forced turnovers were against FCS opponents.

However, we were worse on third down against FBS
FCS 9-35 converted. 25.7%
FBS 50-120. 41.6%

on Fourth Down
FCS 4-6. 66.7%
FBS 14-31 45.1%

We had 3 juco’s in 2015 and they were decent.

Anyone more plugged in hearing rumblings of when this hiring will be done? Signing day is coming.

Meant to say when we would have a DC

Hopefully we have a new DC already and he is recruiting on the trail. If not, what are we doing? Wasting precious time. You would think the search was well under way with how the defense played near end of the year and should be inked by now, maybe just not announced.
Thankfully seems like our staff is keeping our recruiting class in tact! Go get some Rockboyz23!

I would hope SC had a short list of DC candidates when he pulled the trigger, um they did not renew DJ. As a CEO you have to have your next step planned before you play your current move.

The good DC's are still preparing for a bowl game. I don't want one of the ones who is free right now.

Just this week alone there have been plenty of hires of coaches that have teams preparing for bowls. Some have immediately left the school (Satt) some are staying through the bowl (Coach Prime). Pretty sure that some up and coming defensive coach would jump at the opportunity to be the DC at App State regardless of his teams bowl prep. I highly doubt we are getting a DC that is currently employed as a DC from a P5 program, so most that we may be looking at would gladly jump ship. Happens al the time.

Maybe some coaches are like some players, they don’t give a rip about the bowls so they opt out and move on.

Goodness, you guys can't be pleased... When we hired Clark is was lazy and we should have taken our time...

Now that we're "taking our time" to hire a DC, it's because Clark has no idea what we're doing.

Perhaps we already have our guy but aren't being classless and leaking it ahead of time? You know, accepting the wishes of the candidate?

I am so glad that this board does not coach Appalachian Football, because this board would fire coaches during the actual game because they did not score a touchdown on the first play of the game or better yet, did not win the coin toss.
