Personally, we should go get the best players available, whether the position depth is unproven or lacking talent based upon performance this year. If there is a QB in the portal that we believe is good, we should go and try to sign. If the 3 or 4 on the current roster are good enough, they will beat the transfer out in competition. Is it our first priority, no. However, it takes 5 to 10 minutes to inquire if interest.
Tell me you don't know anything about the transfer portal without telling me you don't know anything about the transfer portal...

5-10 minutes to inquire about interest? Change that minutes to hours to even gain access to inquire about interest. For one player.
Tell me you do not know how the actual behind the scenes work related to the transfer portal without telling you do not know how real life works. When kids are in the TP or it is known they will enter the TP, inquiries are made every day about interest through intermediate sources and not directly by the schools. Happens every day...
Correct. But you said we should go sign and then said it takes 5-10 minutes to gauge interest. We can't sign until we take the 5-10 hours to initiate contact with said player.

The coaches cannot legally gauge interest until that 5-10 hours is spent. Can some Joe Snow alum ask a HS coach? Sure. That happens daily. But, if that Joe Snow goes to our coaches and says "this player is very interested" that is called tampering and illegal.
I mean, you’re not wrong, it is tampering and technically illegal, but it’s happening every hour of every day. Contrary to what I guess is popular belief, these kids aren’t just hopping in the portal to take a shot in the dark.
No, it's not happening every hour of every day.

The kids aren't going in the portal to take a shot in the dark. They are going in the portal because they want change. People of influence may be giving them suggestions (and that is happening every minute of every day), but once they are in the portal, they are not illegally contacted every hour of the day.

Almost half of the kids that go in to the portal, don’t come out. It’s a risk but one some are willing to take.

Neuheisel was talking about this the other day. The number is actually higher for G5 guys who go into the portal. I believe he said 57% of G5 guys who had entered the portal were not currently on a roster.

That makes sense. How many of our guys that have gone in found homes? I know Price went down to FCS. But has anyone transferred laterally?

Think what you want, but if you actually think guys aren’t being contacted by folks on behalf of other schools prior to officially being in the portal you couldn’t be more wrong.

Why do we have a thread for hypothetical transfers OUT OF App? I'm not naive but why assume that our players are not happy here? We haven't seen max exoduses before. Maybe they want the challenge to turn it around next season and right the ship.

I'm hoping for a Rush DE/DBs and maybe 1/2 OL.

To piggyback on this post, if we were to speculate on current players leaving, shouldn’t the thread go in the Lodge?

We will be fine with Ryan Burger, if we can keep him. A friend of mine spoke with Frank Ponce, while working out at a gym in the triad, earlier this season and he said Burger is the real deal. Said he is one of the best QBs he has ever seen and will be very close to the caliber of Armanti Edwards.

And for those wondering why Ponce was in the triad, his wife, Christine Cruz, is a news anchor for WXII 12 and she lives in Davidson County.

I don’t see Burger going anywhere. He and his parents love App. I talk with the parents at most games and we are good with them.

That's great news. I think he will be a special player for sure. The little time he played this year, I was impressed. Ponce also said he has a cannon too. The future of our young QB, RBs and WRs looks great.

He is the son of a coach. His dad played in college and coached at both the FBS and NFL level. Dad gets it and has prepared Ryan mentally. I’ve never spoken to Ryan, but if he is like his Dad, he is a very cool customer.

I think I saw 57% of athletes that go into the TP don't find a home (especially G5). It was one sub par season the guys that stay will have something to prove. App will have attrition just like every school. (BUT) the grass isn't always greener

I'm excited to see what he can do. If somehow we do get a bowl game I'd play him exclusively. What's the point in Chase playing another completely meaningless game? He was fantastic for us but the extra practice and a live game would be great for the new guys.

He's going to be ok. Will be a RS fr with a few growing pains BUT great potential.

Remember ZT was young when he started.

I keep saying in other threads I really do feel good about the future. Yes some changes should be made. People forget the D lost 3 NFL caliber players last year - another couple of 5th or 6th year seniors - a retirement late - and a transfer to another school. Topped with some bad recruiting classes and people leaving ( for whatever reason ). Hope SC can right the ship

On a side note - when the NCAA granted all this extra time to players essentially IMO it would be truly hard to develop younger talent even if they have been here for awhile. Some of these players were starters for 3-4 years.

Offensively we need to keep the core of young guys together. Burger, Roberts, Stroman, Kaiden Robinson,
Defensively, Spellman, White, Hopper,

Any particular reason as to why him?

We saw how banged up an RB room can get this year. We offered him out of HS. He's an in-state kid with a ton of talent. we lose 2 RBS this year, that we know of. He's athletic enough to also play some slot if needed. And if we need a 7th reason, Louisville runs a similar system as us so a schematic fit as well.
