I know I’m rivaling NewApp for new topics…..

I all the hoopla after the game as I rewatch it right now, our new Mountaineers played extremely well. Coach talks about finding the right men for App and damn if we haven’t done well.

How about this --- since the transfer portal opened WVU has lost 57 players - 57!!! --- and I don't think of them transferred to Marshall ---

Plus, he probably brought in players who would fit his style/culture. It may not be the App State culture, but it may be the building blocks for what he wants the program to be.

Looks like App State's coaching staff is doing a good job in the portal. Just off the top of my head we had a QB, RB, a couple of Receivers, Offensive Line, and a Linebacker from the portal who all either started or played an important roll so far this season.

QB = Chase Brice
RB = Ahmani Marshall
WR = Kaedin Robinson
WR = Tyler Page
LB = Andrew Parker
OL = Bucky Williams
OL = Isaiah Helms

There are probably several others I have missed but so far they are doing a good job identifying potential pick ups in the portal and finding guys who fit a need.

I think this is our total list and how they went down:

QB Chase Brice- Starter
QB Brady McBride- Backup
RB Ahmani Marshall- Backup who plays a lot
WR Kaedin Robinson- #3 receiver
WR Tyler Page- Backup WR and returns punts
OL Bucky Williams- rotational starter
OL Isaiah Helms- Starter
LB Andrew Parker- Starter
CB Donte Small- Academic casualty and gone
S Stuart Head- Injured and never played
DB Marcus Haskins- Caused problems and transferred for the 4th time in career
LS Jake Mann- Backup LS

On the team last year we had Madison Cone who played a good bit and Jahmir Smith from ND who ended up basically giving up his last year due to injury I think. Austyn Chestnut from UNC provided depth last year.

Of all those names that is what 15 players we brought in and you could say we hit on starters or backups who play a lot to be we hit 8 of 15. Just a couple of bad washouts who never played or did almost nothing. Of all 15 I think 12 could have come back this year and 9 of those 12 play on this team.

Yes it is, and there has been at least a couple of articles in WV newspaper where he has highly praised APP

Don't forget about Dex Lawson. He's starting and played really well against aTm.

Does anyone have information on Jacoby Pinckney? I know he transferred in prior to the portal and was a 4* out of high school and to my knowledge, has not played a single down for us.

From the outside looking at games and results it appears that we have done a good job blending in transfers but not compromising our roster by keeping recruited players down. Again, that's an outside observation. Internally on the team there could be guys who feel slighted by transfer players getting PT. I like to believe that our coaches absolutely evaluate and make the best player decisions possible. I'm not a huge fan of the portal because I see max exodus of players from some programs and other teams who basically use a free agent approach and just try to go all in every season (and figure it out the next). We have had our share of guys coming in from bigger name schools who either didn't make a huge impact or barely played. We have also had some nice adds.

Jake Mann has been starting at LS. Wonder why Johnstone is not on the depth chart?
He had been the starter since he arrived in Boone.

I was under the impression that Johnstone has been out with an injury or something and would start when he returns. That is why I listed Mann as a backup.

An interesting part of the narrative coming out of last weekend is that the transfer portal, considered by so many the kiss-of-death for G5 programs, cuts both ways. All three SBC upsets were lead by transfer QBs and had major contributors who were transfers. There are lots of players out there like Corey Sutton who are from this area, went farther away to major P5s out of high school, and want to be closer to home. App is a great landing place for these players, and history has shown that our top transfers are willing and able to adopt the culture and love for App State as well as any incoming freshman.

It is definitely cutting both ways. We have seen G5 and mostly FCS schools really hurt with losses to the portal who usually would have had to stay because they would sit out while also seeing good players want more playing time or a better situation in general and it helps the G5 school. Places like App State should do well to keep players. The A&M win and a SBC title could be enough to prevent a player like Nate Noel or even a Jalen McLeod who might get a lot of P5 interest in their ears from entering the portal.

We just have to win this week and keep it up because as fast as ESPN jumped on the train they will jump right off if we stumble off the track at all.
