App 23 roster/depth chart
So many transfers last few days and saw they picked up a qb today. Tape looked good (all highlight videos look good), but dude can run and throw. Anyone with more knowledge than me have any guesses who might battle for qb starter next fall? Also what are strengths/weaknesses of roster with seniors leaving and factoring in transfers into program. Thanks!

I would say it’s a “open” competition with Burger and McBride leading the way

Re: App 23 roster/depth chart
IMO it’s still too early to tell. We will have 30ish new faces on the roster. We’ve gotten bigger and stronger at DLine and secondary, but still need some OL retooling, depth and maybe an extra body at RB (i think we get our RB tomorrow)yosef95 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 20, 2022 5:08 pmSo many transfers last few days and saw they picked up a qb today. Re: App 23 roster/depth chart
I was joking with another poster, saying that the quarterback coming in from California could be a hybrid tight end with his size. Maybe short yardage packages at the goal line. Like you said he can run put 15 pounds on him - if he could run a route he might be tough for those linebackers but of course I kid…sort ofyosef95 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 20, 2022 5:08 pmSo many transfers last few days and saw they picked up a qb today. Re: App 23 roster/depth chart
Wasn't Travaris Cadet recruited as quarterback? I'd take another one of those.

I said something similar recently. We used to recruit a TON of QBs let them give it a shot and then convert them Cadet & Hillary among the best examples. I really wish we would still do that.

We could do that in the FCS days. Not so much at this level.CharlotteApp05 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 20, 2022 7:44 pmI said something similar recently. We used to recruit a TON of QBs let them give it a shot and then convert them Cadet & Hillary among the best examples. I really wish we would still do that.

Re: App 23 roster/depth chart
Why do you think we can't do that? If a Demetrius McCray is around in this class I would hope we would still take them because a player like him was going to develop into a NFL player regardless if we are FCS or FBS. I'm not saying there are 5-6 like that to sign every year but I would think there would be 1 or 2 every cycle we could take a shot on.AppSt94 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 20, 2022 7:49 pmWe could do that in the FCS days. Re: App 23 roster/depth chart
My point is in generalities and not to one specific player. We could out athlete pretty much anyone in FCS. The overall team speed was on par with most of the FBS, see Michigan, we just didn’t have the size to match up, Hilary was supposed to be the QB and Armanti emerged.AppStFan1 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 20, 2022 8:43 pmWhy do you think we can't do that? Re: App 23 roster/depth chart
I seem to remember that Peacock and Washington were HS QBs.Great receivers for us.It is not unusual for the best athlete on the HS team to be the QB , well as memory serves me .Like 44 Castle.

Re: App 23 roster/depth chart
Yeah my point was that in HS, especially smaller high schools with less players, the best athletes play QB…. But they could also play WR/CB/RB/FS/TE, and it was clearly a recruiting strategy we had to identify “athletes” and then put them in the best position. And we did it better than anyone.

Re: App 23 roster/depth chart
Castle was a very good QB at Watauga, and pin point accurate with his passes. Yes, he definitely would be a good candidate for a trick play!

Re: App 23 roster/depth chart
We tried exactly that with Andre Goodman, and he bounced within a year.AppSt94 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 20, 2022 7:49 pmWe could do that in the FCS days. Guys who are recruited to play QB tend to want to play QB.

Re: App 23 roster/depth chart
My guess is that QB, DE, and safety will be wide open competitions. Maybe a couple other spots too.

He had other issues that prevented that from happening.EastHallApp wrote: ↑Wed Dec 21, 2022 9:40 amWe tried exactly that with Andre Goodman, and he bounced within a year.AppSt94 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 20, 2022 7:49 pmWe could do that in the FCS days. Re: App 23 roster/depth chart
For QB and Safety I would agree. The DEs rotate so much, there isn’t much difference in who starts and who comes in second. It’s all situational. The hope is that we have the pieces to have a very good group that is three deep.EastHallApp wrote: ↑Wed Dec 21, 2022 9:42 amMy guess is that QB, DE, and safety will be wide open competitions. Re: App 23 roster/depth chart
Wow I think I put out a similar thread last year looking for the 2022 depth and a few people were able to make reasonable stabs at it. Is this the most uncertain offseason in a long time? We had runs of several seasons where we knew the QB situation as well as most key positions. We also had the crazy extra Covid year with super seniors. Now the Portal and what seems to be a larger than normal graduation class has really put a dent in our roster. When was the last time we had to fill nearly half of the roster?
