All Time Favorite Apps
We are just over 30 days out from what is hopefully another highly successful season for the Black & Gold. Thought this might be a good way to pass the time.
Interested to see who everyone’s all time favorite Mountaineers are. One caveat, they have to be guys you have seen play. For instance Dexter Coakley was before my time, so I can’t include him. To make it interesting also post when you started at App or when you started following the Apps. I’m sure we we all have the Armanti’s etc. but curious to see some of the less “famous” guys who you just loved to watch.
Started at App in ‘03, started really watching App in ‘01
Armanti Edwards
Richie Williams
Kevin Richardson
Daniel Bettis
Corey Lynch
Marques Murrell
Jason Hunter
Matt Cline
Kerry Brown
Thomas Hennigan
Devin Stringer
John Law
Jalin Moore
Parker Collins
Left A LOT off this list, just wanted to get the ball rolling. Let’s hear it...
GO APPS!!

Re: All Time Favorite Apps
Add Dexter Jackson to that list for me and Hans Batichon while we’re at it. Also, I have a soft spot for Patrick Blalock who always played bigger than his true size.

Re: All Time Favorite Apps
This brings back fond memories of some great players and teams I've watched play at The Rock.
Top 3 are...
Armanti Edwards
John Settle
Dexter Coakley
(I missed seeing Dino Hackett by one year or I'm sure he would be on the list too)
The rest (in no particular order)...
Bjorn Nittmo
Kevin Richardson
Richie Williams
Marcus Cox
Ritchie Melchor
Harold Alexander
Brian Quick
Dexter Jackson
Thomas Hennigan
Derrick Graham
Jason Hunter
Corey Lynch
Matt Stephens
Marques Murrell
Daniel Kilgore
Neil Cornatzer (local kid from my high school, played softball on the same team with him one summer)
Scott Cornatzer (Neil's brother also from my old high school)
Greg Barnette (my cousin)
Billy Riddle (another local boy)

Re: All Time Favorite Apps
If Coakley, Hackett, Settle, and Royals are not on the list along with the Armanti Edwards types then it is not a real list. Glad you mentioned them. Graham was a stud too.

Best or favorite? I agree that I liked how all those you named played but just to name names I have seen or those who were just stud players here is my list (no current names allowed)appstate24 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 3:19 pmWe are just over 30 days out from what is hopefully another highly successful season for the Black & Gold. Re: All Time Favorite Apps
My Mt. Rushmore of App players are:
Armanti
John Settle
Dexter Coakley
Dino Hackett
I came to App in ‘72 so I’ve seen a lot of players but these to me are the cream of the crop.

For you young guys...you should google/youtube search Bjorn Nittmo and David Letterman. For me it was the first time I ever heard the words Appalachian state in a National type audience. David Letterman was pretty big back in the day. He constantly said "Bjorn Nittmo"....he finally brought him on for interviews.

Re: All Time Favorite Apps
My totally biased list would start with DJ Campbell
. My unbiased list is lengthy and really hard to narrow down. Even though I have loved App football for a long time, the availability of information makes it easier to feel like I "know" the players from the last 15 or 20 years. The folks above have done a great job of listing names I would include, so I'll make an attempt at narrowing it down based on a combination of on-field performance and off-field character. This is NOT an exhaustive list because my mind is a sieve these days and I am sure to leave out someone that is obvious.
Obvious choices:
No list is complete without Armanti Edwards, Dexter Coakley, Matt Stevens, Corey Lynch, Richie Williams, Kevin Richardson....geez....this really is hard....seems like our WR, LB, DB and OL units have been turning out stars in bulk!
OK...I'm trying to think of some players I have really admired over the years that I don't see mentioned above.
I don't see Avery Hall, Pierre Banks....HUGE admiration for what those guys have done for App both on and off the field. Both are absolutely class acts. Tim Sanders rarely gets mentioned but he was a stud RB who spent part of his career backing up John Settle so he seems to get overlooked. IMO they were the best RB tandem at App State until the last few years, and they are still in the discussion. Rick Beasley is another great one.
I'm sure I'll think of more as soon as I submit this but there are a lot of folks on here who know these names better than I.
Honorable mention to David Jackson...never wore the uniform but did a huge amount for App state and an assistant AD and voice of the Mountaineers!

Re: All Time Favorite Apps
I was not familiar with App. St football prior to attending grad school in early/mid 90s given I grew up on the coast. It was EasyU, State and UNC in that part of the state. So for me, it began when I was in grad school. Satt was the QB and was special. Not flashy...just got it done most of the time. The wins against Marshall were phenomenal. I have learned more about the history prior to Satt years, however did not see them play... however know the players were great and made App. St what it is today. So many great players after I graduated and followed over the years. Many to consider. My all-time is AE. He is the GOAT for me.

Re: All Time Favorite Apps
One thing worth pointing out...Statistically, and as a Mountaineer I believe Nate McKinney was a better punter than Sam Martin. Of course Martin made the NFL with a long career, and sure we remember some nice boots he had while at App, but don't let the advantage of going pro and being more recent allow Martin to take away the beast leg McKinney had (IMO).
I remember attending App games while in high school and seeing him warm up with some massive kicks, and when it came to the game time he also had some nice punts.

Re: All Time Favorite Apps
Nittmo had an awesome leg. I remember seeing him put several kick offs through the uprights. If I remember right, he has had a rough life due to concussionsspacemonkey wrote: ↑Fri Jul 29, 2022 1:34 amFor you young guys...you should google/youtube search Bjorn Nittmo and David Letterman.
