Cincinnati and the rest of the G5

By my count the G5 went 6-1 against P5 opponents this bowl season. Cincinnati's loss to Alabama being the only P5 win over a G5 opponent. Now we will hear for the rest of time how a G5 program doesn't belong in the CFP. Odd how that never comes up with the perpetual big stage disappointment--Notre Dame.

I agree. And at least as of now Alabama is better than Georgia. They have beaten others worse than they beat Cincy in the playoffs previous years. Cincy was still in the game later than Michigan ever thought about being.

There is just an undeniable difference between the top 3 or 4 P5’s and the rest. Has there been a really competitive semi-final playoff game yet? Had they gone to 8 teams how would an Ole Miss had fared against Alabama? Would Ohio State and Georgia been closer?

Since the playoffs expanded to 4 teams, there have been 16 semi-final games played...

Only 3 games have been decided by 7 or less points.

There have been 2 shut outs, and 3 games where the losing team only scored field goals (Of course lost by a large margin).

I can't say I'm surprised by either result yesterday. Cincinnati didn't lose by a super large margin, but Bama played much more conservative than previous games I've seen them play. Michigan got a nice dose of speed mixed with size, something you never see in the Big Ten.

Based on what I saw last night, Cincinnati would’ve beaten Michigan, and I bet the final AP poll will reflect that.

I agree...more often than not, the Big 10 is a fraud, not in the class of ND however

6-1 and that’s not including UAB over BYU. That’s like 7-1.

The Big 10 is probably the second best conference in college football, so I'm not sure "fraud" is the right word. It does go to prove how dominant the top of the SEC is. This year, the SEC wasn't quite as deep as it has been in the past but over the past 10 - 15 years, the top half of the SEC would have dominated any other conference with very few exceptions (Ohio State and Oklahoma...occasionally Oregon and others sneak into the discussion. I know there are many on here who hate the SEC but that's just how it is.

Take OSU out of the Big 10 and there's not a team there who could occasionally beat the best of the SEC. Same for taking Clemson out of the ACC. The Big 12 is making gains but of course losing OU and UT is going to hurt big time. PAC 12 continues to talk about getting better but it hasn't translated on the field over the course of the season. I compared the Big 10 and ND as frauds because they get sooooooo much hype and never deliver (except OSU)

I don't disagree about the over-hype that is given to those programs...especially ND. Ohio State has, at least, won a championship in (fairly) recent years (2014). I wouldn't argue that they get more than their share of hype though.

It's not a Notre Dame problem. Why people continue to say this is beyond me. Clemson has been blown out, Ohio State has been blown out, Alabama has been blown out, Oklahoma has been blown out. It happens. Notre Dame was actually more competitive against Alabama than Ohio State was in 2020. No one called out Ryan Day or Ohio State despite their not doing anything since 2014.

The facts don't back up the supposition that Notre Dame doesn't belong there.

On ND, the reason I don't like ND is they go it on their own and not align to a conference. I do think as an independent they typically fall in the 5-15 ranking range regularly. However, that all being said, if App could do what ND does, I would love it and think we are great. So I am hypocritical and know it.

Relative to the overall college football landscape, there are only a handful of teams that are the cream of the crop (Bama, UGA, Clemson, OSU). There are a few others that have some good years occasionally but rarely can they consistently compete on that level. My rationale for an expanded playoff is not because I think any of these other teams could win it but merely to allow more teams the opportunity to at least play in the dance and all the associated publicity you get.

Notre Dame has not won a significant bowl game since 1994.

ND is the Dallas Cowboys of NCAA football.

The thing about ND that annoys me is that the NCAA and media continue to pander to them even though they really haven't been a championship level team for a while. They do have a huge fan base and lots of history, but I keep thinking they need to just join a conference (ACC or Big 10) and get it over with.

So does Army.
