What if?

Unread post by WVAPPeer » Thu Dec 30, 2021 3:07 pm

For all of those who feel App had a down year with another 10 win season and who still question whether our Head Coach should have gotten a contract extension.
WHAT IF...
APP had started the season ranked in the top 10, had a QB who was considered a Heisman candidate, and finish the season 6-7 losing to a team who only won 3 conference games???

I would like to hear what the comments would be.... Have at it

I would feel just like I do now, but worse lol.

This past season was not a bust obviously, but it was very disappointing to have such a pathetic finish. I do think it's too soon to extend Clark, but I'm not upset about it at all.

Watching a 7-5 (4-4 conference) UT play what amounts to a home game against Perdue. There has to be 50,000+ UT fans in the stands having a great time cheering on their 7-5 team. Had we gone 7-5 there would have been an absolute meltdown along with a thread dedicated to the head coach, Ponce (oops already there) the QB and the rest of the staff. Wait there is already one for Clark and his contract.

I have to believe that the general consensus for Carolina is that it was an epic disappointment this season despite the dumb ranking. I’ve always felt that there should be no real rankings until after 6 games. Play a few non-conference and a few conference games then see where you stand. Based on what I hear Mack has a boatload of potential coming in.

I was disappointed like most mostly due to the ass whipping we took the first time in La. The bowl game sucked but we all have to accept our typical bowl fate unless we run the table. 10 wins is great no matter who you play so I’ll take it.

Yosef help us all. We have finally stooped to comparing what if scenarios between us and the baby blue.

It always has on this and the Delphi boards. In fact it goes back to circa 1938 when we played them with Kidd Brewer coaching.

I don't get the benefit in comparing us to a mediocre Carolina team or a mediocre Tenneesee team. That's the point, we should have higher expectations for App football.

Unfortunately if Mack does as good of job at Hick Hill as he did for the Long Horns, it won't be long before they aren't mediocre. He's a real recruiter. I think he and Sparky recruited John Settle away from the Heels.

He's definitely a recruiter, but his GameDay execution is horrific. Most tarhole fans and alums I know are finished with him. - I particularly love to rub salt in their wounds.

No institution need start talking contract extension until just before the last year of the contract.

The reason that can't be done is that it will be/is used against said school during recruiting.

They are mediocre on their level, not necessarily mediocre on our level. But, as they say, any given Saturday.

If the Heels had not sukked so bad in the first quarter, they might could have made a game out of it.

With Mack's lousy game day execution, he won a National Championship at Texas in big boy football. Wish Shawn had that lousy game day execution.

As to their fickle fans being finished with him, they were finished with him when left the last time. See how that turned out. They practically begged him back.

His last 4 years at Texas were barely mediocre for them. 30-21 with zero 10 win seasons and one 9 win. He was basically shown the door.

That's not the way that College Football works. Clark's extension was as much about the buyout as it was the actual contract extension. Just like the Original Post in this thread, you can look at things in a bubble or you can look at them in the CFB landscape.

Sonny Dykes was offered a big extension after three years at SMU (29-15). (approximately $1.5M to $4M)--He left for TCU
Prior to this season Billy Napier's contract was amended three times (going to $2M this season) after going 29-11 in three seasons
Jeff Traylor at UTSA received an extension through 2031, eight games into his second season. He now makes $2.8M per year and has a 19-7 record in two years with an 0-2 bowl record and 1 CC.
After last season, Jamey Chadwell went from the lowest payed HC to the second highest in the Sun Belt by getting a 7-year contract extension with an annual raise of $50K each year. This is with an at the time career record of 19-17, plus being on staff when Joe Moglia took back over as head coach in 2018 5-7. Essentially, he was given a big contract off of their COVID year success.
Even at the p5 level, Neal Brown was given a contract extension after after posting 5-7 and 6-4 his first two years at West Virginia

Shawn deserved an extension and a bump…. as WASU 93 stated that is the market we are in. It was the right thing to do.
