Yes....those expansion pictures had everyone jacked up. Then Owens was expanded and we started to realize that we could go big. Then the west stands were expanded, new press box, and the east side was totally ignored. "We Don't Do It That Way At Appalachian" became the operative phrase.

I want to jump on the Boone history train. I think I’ve posted this before and I hope it’s from way before y’all’s time but sometimes I’m unsure............
But anyway.......it’s an excursion on the ET&WNC RR from Johnson city to Boone where you start out with scenes from the doe river gorge in Carter county TN. At a 1:20ish you get to a ASTC? football game on college field where you can see the old old library as well as smith Wright in the background.
At 4:10ish you get to my favorite part and I’ve been told that’s what is now rivers street. The scenes of the rails again start in front of what is now Shaffer Performing arts center (Farthing for the old people) and travels down the future rivers street where you get to a group of people at 4:25. This is the foot of stadium drive and the people are around the monument built from the foundation stones of Daniel Boone’s cabin. Long story but the legend I’ve been told is that the original stones were lost during the construction of rivers street and most likely ended up either in the foundation of the road or in a rubbish pile.
But it just blows my mind how little was in and how undeveloped Boone was at the time. But the video finishes out with tweetsie climbing through what is now 7 devils with a view of grandfather mtn.
I’ve hiked what’s left of most of the original rail line between Boone and Hampton TN. There isn’t much left of the original line and the attached picture with tunnel are the only surviving original rails I have been able find.
That's right, Scat. Rankin almost engulfed the entire site of College Field. I was a freshman in the fall of '62 and walked on a gravel path behind the south endzone of College Field to and from class every day. Of course, Conrad Stadium opened that fall. I was in attendance at all five home games of the '62 season. The flood occurred in 1940. So I am guessing this footage was late 1930's. I think I have read about this on the internet and it gave a date. NC 105 into Boone mostly runs on top of what was once the railroad right-of-way.
Yeah the video was fall/ summer of 1937. The field is college field that was located where Duncan and rankin are now. And yeah I’ve pulled the USgs maps from the 39s of Boone and the tracks went from rivers street down faculty streeet and began to turn south around the longhorn steakhouse where it crossed a creek and you can find the only surviving section of rr bed. It’s located at the base of the hill below the old high school baseball stadium at the corner of 105 and across Wilson dr from the steakhouse. Then follows 105 to a t to the wagauga river bridge where is turns left onto what is now tweetsie rd. It’s croses the river upstream of hound ears golf course and heads uphill into the 7 devils area. The tracks in fosco and where it crossed the watagua river near hound ears are where they were destroyed in the 40s. I’ve heard there were tracks in 7 Devils and near the cannon hospital in newland that survived into the 80s and 90s. Now the only surviving tracks are in the Doe River gourge just over the state line in Hampton tn. I’ve attached more pictures from that adventure in the gorge.
