Billy Napier

Looks like Billy Napier is the top candidate to replace Joe Moorhead at Mississippi State, who has reportedly been let go this morning.

If MSU indeed ends up hiring Napier, it will be interesting to see if ULL can sustain the success that they have had over the past two seasons, or if they end up taking a couple of steps back a la Troy this season.

I've got a lot of family that are Mississippi State alumni, so I keep up with their sports and root as a fair-weather fan. I think it's a bad decision to fire a coach after only 2 years, but I think hiring Napier would be a great decision. I think he's a good coach, and he already has recruiting ties to the area. Plus, that means ULLLLLLL has to restart with a new coach. It's a win-win for me!

I think ULL will keep on doing what they do, just like we did.

I don't know. Not so sure they have the roots as deep as we do. UL struggled under the last regime with a lot of the same players they had the last 2 seasons.

As long as that means they can still never beat App that's fine.

Hopefully they can find yet another coach that complains about coming to Boone so that beating them is even more fun.

There’s a direct correlation between Napier’s extension that was just announced and this job opening. Smart move by UL to cover their butts. But, Napier gone!

If Napier leaves UL, he will leave them with a full cupboard in terms of the roster / talent, but I wouldn't under estimate the his impact as a coach. UL doesn't have the long term consistency of App, so hiring the right successor would be critical. That's kind of a truism though, when hiring a coach at this level.

Part of me doubts Napier leaves for Mississippi State. I know the money and resources that are there but if he fails, which is likely at Mississippi State, you set yourself back a decade. Could see him waiting on South Carolina to open up next season because barring some drastic turnaround, Muschamp is as good as gone.

Hard for ULL or any G5 to compete with salaries for HC & Staff. He's probably gone if offered.

I agree, he's gone for the 3.5-4 million SEC money, if offered.

Why would you consider South Carolina to be a better option than Mississippi State? The division (East vs. West) or just the idea of returning home to SC? MSU has won at least 6 games every year since 2009 (5-7 in 2009) and has multiple 9 win seasons and one 10 win season. I don't know what they would be offering in terms of salary, but if an offer were made, I have to think it would be hard to turn down.

I don't know, Napier seems like exactly the kind of guy who would come into MSU, squeeze a couple 9-4 seasons out of them, and parlay that into a better job. Like Mullen did, except probably faster.

Didn't he just sign a $3M buyout extension? Good call on ULL's part.

Absolutely East vs West - In the West you have Alabama, LSU, Auburn, Texas A&M, Ole Miss with Kiffin (for at least a year or two) - The East you have UGA and Florida and everyone else

Just looked at Miss States 2020 schedule and they have a four game stretch of:Home vs. TAMU, @Bama, @LSU, Home vs. Auburn. That is brutal! The worst part is every year in the SEC West you'll get some variation of that. Going to be a tough slog for any HC to walk in to.

He's from upstate Georgia, I believe. Went to school in Greenville and has coached at Clemson.

Then you have the whole SEC West thing that could help your career or set you back to a place that makes you untouchable as a head coach for some time. Napier is a quality coach and seems to be an even better guy. There is little doubt Louisiana will continue their current trajectory under him and if it's me, I'm betting on myself to land a better job in the next offseason.
