"Poor Performances" in the past 3 years

Unread post by appvette » Tue Sep 10, 2019 4:12 pm

How many games over the past 3 years under Satt would you say we had performances as bad or worse than Saturday against UNCC?

This really opened my eyes to how unrealistic my own expectations were since Satt had 12 games that were either bad losses or ugly wins in 3 years. In some cases, we had bad performances against the worst teams in the country whereas UNCC will likely make a bowl. I didn't even include beatdowns by Clemson or Georgia or the loss to Troy where we could have won the outright championship.
We seem to forget these bad games and only remember the good from previous seasons. I guess we can allow Drink to have 1 or 2 ugly wins!

2016 (Beat Toledo in bowl game)

Game 3 – embarrassed by Miami at home
Game 4 – Gave up 38 points and about 500 yards to Akron
Game 5 – Went into halftime 0-0 against winless Georgia State
Game 7 – Went into halftime 10-6 against Idaho (now FCS)

2017 (Beat Toledo in bowl game 34-0)

Game 3 – Beat a terrible Texas State team by 7 points, was outgained in yards 385 – 283
Game 4 – lost to Wake Forest
Game 5 – New Mexico State (2-4) - went into 4th quarter tied, NMSU outgained App in yards 532-425 and first downs 28-17. Won 45-31 due to 6 turnovers by NMSU
Game 6 – Idaho (2-4)– Went into halftime down 17-0 and into 4th quarter down 20-7. Outgained in yards 312-276. Won 23-20
Game 7 – Coastal Carolina (1-6) – Went into halftime down 19- 17, won 37-29
Game 8 – Umass (2-6) – lost 30-27
Game 9 – ULM (4-5) – lost 52-45

2018 (killed MTSU in bowl)
Game 7 – Took a #25 ranking into Georgia Southern and got smacked down 34-14

Best (and most sensible) post since Saturday afternoon! Can’t wait to read replies. It’s almost like the “Never Roofers” from the beginning were in 3 point stances, waiting to jump up and scream “Told you so!”. Yes we had a poor defensive showing, and don’t know what the rest of the season holds, but we see something like this at least once a year. 2-0 for now.... Embrace it, and focus on the positives!

2017 was an ugly win season. I remember watching us just get by in any number of games. I said we have not looked good this year and I agree with the players themselves that last Saturday’s defensive performance was embarrassing. What I really hate about all the over the top reaction is that the players had to see it and go, wow, we’re 2 and 0 and the fans think we’re horrible. To that I say, guys, if the fans didn’t think you couldn’t get it done they wouldn’t bother getting mad at the coaches. I have one reason for my high expectation for this season and that’s our players!!!

2017 Texas State - Tx St marched 99 yrds from their one yard line to our one yard line as time expired about to tie it up or have opportunity for 2 pt conv to win. Felt like our D couldn't stop them all night.

I get this is one year outside your timeframe, but the November 5, 2015 home loss to Arkansas St. still sticks out in my mind.

We have a more complete team than 2017, so if we are hoping to replicate that season, I’d be disappointed.

This is such a great topic. And it really made me think about how far, as a program, we are from a Bosie St. Compare our loss to Tennessee (a game we had in hand for three and a half quarters) to Bosie's win at FSU (where they were dominated on the field in the first half). I get FSU is a dumpster fire. But when was the last time Bosie St. got handled at home the way Miami did us. This is why pollsters give them the benefit of the doubt: they earn it.

I'm sure the same people that wanted to fire Satt are behind all this doom and gloom. Its okay to have concerns, but this has been beyond excessive. Let's put the pitchforks down.

September 22, 2017. Lost to an unranked Virginia team 42-23 in Boise

Boise St. beat FSU by 5 pts, and struggled with Marshall. La Monroe I believe too same FSU squad to overtime. They are not that far if any ahead of any Sun Belt team this season if you ask me. Unfortunately we may not be either.

I agree that I wanted to do better than 2017, but we won the conference that year and looked awesome at the end of the year, capping it by crushing a great Toledo team. Maybe it is unrealistic to expect a first year coach to do better than 2017. If so, the coaching staff should be allowed six more poor performances before we pull out the pitch forks.

Me too! That game was uglier than the UNCC game and look how we ended the season... Shutout a top 25 offense in a bowl game.

Seems like there is some restlessness around the 2-0 Broncos as well.
