Charlotte has withdrawn contract when Head Coach wanted to pursue other options.

Wow. I actually feel bad for the Niners fans. Finally did something right and it still blew up on them.

Hope we can afford him. ECU may now be in the mix but hopefully the fact he will be closer to family, which he at least says is important, by coming to Boone will make up for less $$. Plus App isn’t a rebuilding job. Instant winner.

I thought about ECU being in the mix. It will be interesting to see how it develops. We couldn't out-bid them but I have to think App would position him better for his next step. ECU will take 2 or 3 years to turn around. No doubt it would be an opportunity there though.

Can you imagine the intensity in next year’s game with Charlotte if Houston is our coach?!

Withdrawn. Also known as getting rejected.

wow, as if they weren't already struggling. I suppose there are plenty of FBS coordinators and other options, though.

I like Houston a lot if we're in the market, but it might be a bit premature to assume he'd be our first choice (or even a candidate).

I think he backed off purely because of ECU. It was telling when they fired Montgomery on Thursday before their last game, right after the Houston-UNCC news linked. Why else would they choose that otherwise odd timing?

Could be us one day, don't throw stones. AAC schools can pay more for coaches.

If this is true, UNCC got played. Houston releases their offer to increase his own stock, with zero intentions of ever going to UNCC. Well played.

Maybe it's Karma after all those insults about mountain people, and outdoor plumbing, and dental hygiene.

Not bad for a poor ole mountain boy from Franklin, right UNCC fans?

This is the most interesting thread (or whatever its called) I've seen. There is a lot going on here. Is the basic assumption that Satt is gone? Why can ECU "outbid" us? The size of our fanbase? Or is ECU a more prestigious job? And of course, why can't Charlotte get out of it's own way?

I'm genuinely interested in these things because my biggest fear are the natural advantages UNCC and Georgia St. have over us.

ECU can outbid us because their athletic department has more money to pay a football coach. They sell more tickets, bring in larger booster club donations, and play in a league with a more lucrative TV deal.

This is an "if Satt's gone" scenario, and I think the main worry is money.

Here are the 2017-2018 salaries:
Charlotte paid Brad Lambert $625,000 in base pay. He had a possible $120,000 in bonuses, but he didn't make anything in bonus pay last year.
App paid Satt $712,500 in base pay last year. He has a possible max bonus of $295,000 and actually made $145,000 in bonuses last year.
ECU paid Montgomery $1,102,500 in base pay. He had a potential max bonus of $850,000, but didn't make any.
Source for all that salary info.

ECU does draw more fans (had close to 37k per home game last year vs App's average of less than 26k. PDF) and has more conference money, as the AAC has better deals across the board than the Sun Belt or CUSA.

ECU is a better job. More established in FBS, more money, better facilities, better conference. I think we whip their ass on the field, but I have to admit I understand why Houston would go there instead of here or Charlotte. Only negative would be living in Greenville, not exactly the most beautiful setting.

Niner fans have been on Twitter specifically gloating to ECU and App fans about hiring Houston for a week. They’re talking about taking App/ECU recruits, the works.

Sometimes in my line of work I wonder if justice actually exists. Today I know that it does.

You could argue that App might be as good or a better opportunity *right now* based on inheriting a loaded roster vs. having to rebuild that disaster in Greenville. But in a vacuum, yes, I agree with this.

As for Houston specifically - again, not only do we not know for sure that we have an opening, but it's far from certain that we'd offer Houston the job if we did. At the very least I think we'd strongly consider "in the family" candidates, unlike ECU who appears to be giving him the full-court press.
