Re: Attendance?
Obviously a topic beaten to death on many threads but just imagine what our attendance would average if were in a more regional conference. Oh well maybe one day

Re: Attendance?
It was definitely nice and full. I missed the opener against GW, but I love them getting rid of the temp bleachers. It made the stadium look that much fuller. Now we just need to get rid of that track.....

Re: Attendance?
The bank area concourse was packed with students. They need a place to sit. At least until they leave at halftime.

At least those temporary tents hid OFH. I had forgotten how ugly it looks, because of those temporary stands.appstatealum wrote: ↑Sun Sep 30, 2018 7:51 amIt was definitely nice and full. Re: Attendance?
The swarm of monarch butterflies on the home side was pretty cool too.
Also liked the addition of the train whistle to the scores. I wonder if that's supposed to be a nod to Tweetsie Railroad. (Which for those who might not know, was an actual mining train route which ran from Boone to Johnson City. The depot in Boone was at the corner of Depot and River street and "used" to be the Alliance Bible Fellowship church when I was there, but now it's the Chuck Beasley Media Complex. They gutted it but apparently they left the stone exterior walls standing.

Re: Attendance?
If I recall correctly... A big flood, triggered by a hurricane, in 1940 killed the Linville River Railway. Cafe Portifino is in the old depot building... Tweetsie's original depot station! A good read in interested in the history of it all... https://www.theclio.com/web/entry?id=27863

I have a few books about Western North Carolina railroading I can recommend to those that would like to know more about this history. Even more forgotten is the train into Todd.

Nice find, I get that magazine and read that story back in the spring. Good friend has just purchased a cabin in the Deep Gap area and was telling him that story just yesterday.McLeansvilleAppFan wrote: ↑Sun Sep 30, 2018 1:40 pmAnd more here.

Re: Attendance?
A few take aways. One, trees do grow back, but don't denude a mountain side.
Two, I really wish Boone still had a train. Maybe someday Amtrak will go to Asheville and I can ride Amtrak to Hickory and find some other way to get to Boone in time for the game.

Re: Attendance?
Yeah the 1940 flood killed the Boone section of the line. I think the line is still used on the TN side. I don't know about the depot. The place I'm talking about is right next to Portifino's. I'm just going off what my Geology professor told me. (Which was actually a pretty informative class because we studied a lot about Tweetsie and the feldspar and iron mining it serviced between Watauga and Avery Counties.WXAPP wrote: ↑Sun Sep 30, 2018 1:31 pmIf I recall correctly... Re: Attendance?
Yep, the ETRY still runs over 7 miles in Johnson City, TN and connects to both CSX and NS it seems. I doubt it serves as a bridge between the two as I imagine NS and CSX also connect with each other somewhere in Johnson City without the need for the ETRY.

For a minute there I felt like an old man reading about train/Depot history.McLeansvilleAppFan wrote: ↑Sun Sep 30, 2018 1:40 pmAnd more here.

Re: Attendance?
I know they're only temporary for this year (but may be brought back in some way for the wide sidelines) but I personally don't like the look of white vinyl tents next to the field. Maybe better if they had graphics on them or something. Small gripe. Personal opinion.appstatealum wrote: ↑Sun Sep 30, 2018 7:51 amIt was definitely nice and full. Re: Attendance?
Agreed. Black tents with App logos etc....Future home of a beer garden? I’d liken it to something you would see at a golf tournament- bistro tables and stuff. That would be sweet.APPdiesel wrote: ↑Mon Oct 01, 2018 3:38 pmI know they're only temporary for this year (but may be brought back in some way for the wide sidelines) but I personally don't like the look of white vinyl tents next to the field.
