Missing an old "rival"

The Charlotte "rivalry" talk has me reminiscing about an old long time rival...WCU. This was a real good rivalry for awhile, even with ASUs recent dominance it was always a game both fan bases would look forward to. Any chance we can swap WCU in for Charlotte?
I still love this video played during a break at an early 2000s game.

Not missing them but those games were a lot of fun back before the gap between our programs grew so large. Enjoyed seeing those old clips. Thanks for posting.

We play Gardner-Webb in a couple weeks...don't see why WCU can't be our 'tune up' game.

App can’t afford to pay WCU. They probably get $350k+ for their their FBS money games while App pays $100-$150k. Plus I don’t think their fans are keen on playing a 1 and done with the Mountaineers.

Nope. Their fans can’t understand why we wouldn’t play a home and home series with them.

Interesting that you mention the old rivalry as it came up in conversation with UNCC athletic staff yesterday, specifically the need for new rivalries, on both sides. The way to accomplish this is realignment ,and these people see it. I am hopeful ,but it might take awhile.

Western..nah. Some really older guys might miss playing Catawba or LR. As someone said, moved on. As I sat and watched yesterday and then saw how PSU blasted ACC member Pitt I thought, we are big time now.

The Catamount fans on the Catamount Pride Board made it clear that they would stop contributing to athletics if all the football games would have to be played at APP STATE! Of course, that is the only way that WCU could play US because APP STATE is NOT allowed to play football at ANY FCS stadiums!

So, they’d be out $10,000 bucks.

ECU just throttled UNC-Cheat 41-19.

Western's AD said we could continue the rivalry if the series was a home and home.
I'm good. Rather play NC Central or A&T.

But lets not pretend that Cheat is even halfway decent this year

The WCU/ASU rivaly was on the out for the last 15 years or so that it existed. Near the end it was obvious one team was on the up and up and the other was struggling. We really outgrew the rivalry unfortunately.
Georgia Southern is our arch rival now, with stAte quickly becoming our #2 both literally and figuratively

The Eagles seemed to have found their footing again so hopefully by the time we play them later this year it's once again that date on the calendar we all circle.

Thanks for posting..memories. We have moved on. Would like to see us rekindle
the other purple in state rival ECU. It was pretty big in the early to mid 70's and makes more sense today.
All this talk about UNCC being a rival, I just don't see it. They need another 75 years of history or something. It just doesn't feel "right" or proper (meh). I know it isn't true but to me they will never lose that glorified community college feel
I do think realignment is coming, just not sure when. ACC/SEC isn't letting any of us in so thinking the old ECU, maybe UNCC, Marshall, ODU, Ga So, ASU subdivision mentioned previously looking more like a real possibility. Maybe with So Miss, UAB, MTSU, WKY, La Tech, ULL or Memphis or some variation.

We could play them but it wouldn’t be a rivalry game anymore, just an FCS tune-up like any other. No special appeal to it imo, and certainly not worth paying any sort of premium to bring them to town rather than any other FCS team.

To me the primary rivals should be Wake and ECU....Stink is ok but I dont hate them near as much as ECU, and I could learn to despise WFU just as much. WFU is just too close to ignore as a potential long term rival.
