Five years ago today the Apps committed to competing at College Football’s highest level. The rest is history. Two conference championships and three bowl victories in as many eligible seasons. The most successful FCS/FBS transition of all time.
We’ve really got something special going here. Fame and accolades that have nothing to do with beating some team from the Midwest years ago. FCS powerhouse to G5 powerhouse in
record time.
It’s Great To Be a Mountaineer.

Set a reminder for 5 more years so you can type 7 conference championships, and 8 bowl victories.

And, a top 25 appearance.

Did I miss something? I remember getting some votes here and there.

We've gotten close in votes but have yet to make it into the top 25.
Troy became the first SunBelt team to be ranked after beating us in 2016. I think you can safely say that we would have taken that spot if we had won instead.

We would have been ranked had we beaten Tennessee in 2016, Troy in 2016, Arkansas State in 2015 and maybe Wake in 2017.

So I guess we don't play well when just outside the top 25.

This got me thinking, when was the last time App won when we were not expected to. For the majority of our games we are favored and I feel we typically win the ones we are supposed to win (don't look at UMass and ULM from last year!). However, with the P5 games aside I guess the last time you could say would be ULL and stAte back in '14 when we went on the road and won both. You'll find no complaints from me on the first handful of years in FBS. Some close games I wish could have gone our way (Tennessee and Troy in 2016) but one helluva ride so far!

It may have been less, but I'm pretty sure we were 7 point dogs to Toledo in Mobile.

Crazy how little respect we have been given by the folks betting. And I prefer it that way personally.

Ethan Joyce posted a brief blurb on the anniversary, and he also throws Gonzo some love for pointing out the date.

Also, I looked at the poll from the article from five years ago (Gonzo’s link). It is safe to say that minds have been changed.

I wish I could say I bookmarked that event five years in advance in my calendar but I only posted that tweet after seeing it on my Facebook memories “on this day” thing.

Funny that the WSJ Bowman article from 5 years ago had a photo slide show included a game against future fellow SBC move-up Coastal, as well as that other move-up I will not mention from New England.

We were 7.5 point favs vs Ohio
Toledo was favored by 1.5 in 2016.
