3rd and 1 late in the game?

Does anyone remember when we had 3rd and 1 and we were on their side of the field in 4 down territory? We threw one in the endzone and jj took a sack on 4th down. Personally I thought that was a game changer.. Did not like the calls at all.

Yup, I remember that series. ISU scores on the next drive, I think, before halftime.

I was sitting near the families of a couple of our receivers. We were all questioning the play calling. Needless to say there was plenty of facepalming going on. :?

If we had scored we'd have taken the lead.
We had 2 plays to get one yard. It should have been 2 pass/run option plays at worse. Terrible play calling that may/could cost us the game...

ya, there was some strange playcalling this game, stiil dont understand why JJ is not under center on 3rd or 4th downs and very short. But overall, SS and his staff did everything we could have hoped for when the season began. We ended up 10th best offense in the FCS, last year I believe we were 30th. Next year there is no reason not to be in the top 5. SS is good, once he gets his own players in, your not going to stop this offense.

I agree with you. EVERYONE around me was saying the same thing. Go deep on 3rd when we needed 2-3 yards....even if we ran the ball, we had two plays to get the first down.....Just hope next year we don't run it up the middle 8-10 times on 1st down....grrrrr...

I don't see how in the heck the receivers parents could say that. All day long, the play call got the receivers in the right places and either Jamal threw it over their heads or they dropped the darn ball, Sounds like the parents were trying to rationalize their precious sons' lack of execution or why we didn't throw to their kid.. You can see why we keep having prima donnas and "me" players.

If we didn't like Satterfield's play calling, who would you suggest? What I saw was poor execution of plays that should have worked.

I think that sack was perhaps the play of the game for them. Its late in the 4th and we only need 1 yard for a first down. If we continue the drive and score we go ahead with very little time left in the game. Instead we give up a sack and they turn around a drive for a field goal and pad their lead to 7. Anything would have been better then a sack. JJ has to know not to give up a sack, even in his injured state. He should have thrown the ball away. I understand that JJ is gimpy and has a bad knee but he can't give up a sack at that point in the ballgame. That play was a game changer.

I liked the calls better than the execution.

Plain simple fact. JJ has the tools and it shows most of the time. His big downfall is that he often makes bad decisions. Taking a sack and throwing into double to triple coverage when he has another man open are prime examples.
Why we don't go under center with 1 yard to go I will NEVER understand.
We have come a long way from where we were a few games into the season but we should have won this game.

Agreed, not showing up for the first quarter was just too much to overcome.

Yes we should have won this game. I don't think we utilized the passing game very well at all. We rarely stretched the field and didn't use the middle of the field at all. Illinois State finished third in their conference and honestly was not a very impressive team this season, or today for that matter. But they beat us fair and square. However I dont feel they are capable of making a run and their season ends next weekend.

We did throw for almost 400 yards against them and they only give up 175 per game. I do agree we didn't utilized the middle of the field at ALL. When we did, we had HUGE plays. If we utilized the middle, 500+ yards today for sure.

Totally agree that we lost the game on those two play calls. 3rd and inches, and we look end zone from the 40 yard line. I was actually ok with that, because I turned to my roommate and said we know we have it on 4th down so why not take a shot and catch them cheating. Then on 4th and inches, when we know they are going to stuff the middle, we drop back to pass with no protection. They then take the ball and march down and score. Possibly a 14 point swing. Satterfield tried to be cute and it backfired on us big time. I do think he called a fairly good game other than that series, however.

We're actually talking about two different sacks. The one previously mentioned was in the first half. Only comment I can make about "throwing the ball away" is that you can't throw it away if you're still in the box. Remember Wofford and the "fumble"? I don't think it's was all on JJ.

I'm glad we have JJ for another season. He can QB for my team anytime. I recognize that he sometimes makes questionable decisions. However, JJ is quite a gamer and you can't argue with his numbers. I wouldn't be surprised if we learn later that his injury is rather significant.

I think another game changing play was in the 4th and we had Miller wide open on the sideline on a wheel route. Nobody between him and the end zone and JJ under threw him. I believe we score there we take a 7 point lead with little time left in the 4th..

He's already said he needs major knee surgery in the off season...

There is only one stat that counts and it is on the scoreboard at the end of the game. It is much better to have 100 yards and win than 500 and lose.
It is no secret that he needs surgery. I hope it is not worse after that game. It really makes me wonder why he was in towads the end of the game. To say that he could not get hurt any worse is just not true. When you are that hobbled you can't protect yourself as well. We have another QB. I think it was a bad move by the coaches and trainer.
