I couldn't figure out Bob Griese's connection to App, but finally found on Wikipedia that he has a house in Banner Elk.

Who on here knew that already?

I got Bob Griese's autograph in the late 1970's when Miami was at Atlanta. I wonder if he will remember me? If was a Bob Griese labeled football that Bob Griese signed. I should start a GoFundMe to see if I could get a chance to ask him to resign the football, and catch up on old times. I think we really connected after the game for those 30 seconds.

One of my coaching friends made it to the last cut on one of the Griese era teams. He played for little ol' Livingstone College.

I believe Greise has had a Summer home at the Elk River development for several years now. Don Shula had one there too, if my memory is still intact.

Don Shula has one in the High Country as well.

Bob Matheson is the one who brought them both up here first, along with a couple more of his old teammates. He's the reason they bought houses up here. Bob was a great friend of the family and I met a lot of them when I was a kid.

I worked at Stonewalls in Banner Elk back the late eighties while I was finishing up at App. Don Shula was a Stonewalls' patron back then. Perhaps Don introduced Bob to the area. BTW, the food at Stonewalls was top notch. The guy that founded and owned Stonewalls was a total ahole to work for, but he did the cheffing and I respected his passion for what he did. It was perfect or it was not served to a patron.

Shula lived(s) in Linville Ridge. I cleaned the carpets in his house once.

Great job by Gillin and Co to put this together.

I had many interactions with Mack Brown and his wife Sally while working at Eseeola for two seasons. They were and still might be members at Eseeola. Great people, and Mack was nice enough to talk football (Specifically Vince Young) with me while I poured him a glass of wine. Wish I had the balls to convince my wife a $1,000 Gala is worth the trip to Boone. It be a nice event to attend.

I grew up in Banner Elk and was going to say that Don Shula was one of the very early homeowners in Linville Ridge, he's been here a long time. Good point about Stonewalls-it was very, very good back in the day.

Also glad to see more names involved that aren't directly associated with the university, but do have ties to the area. Back in the 90s and then when our daughter was at APP '99-03, Stonewall's was always one of our dinner spots when in The High Country - it was always very good - Someone told me a couple of years ago that it was closed, haven't been up Banner Elk way for at least 10 years

I worked at Elk River when I was a student at App. Griese was a king size jack ass. Shula, on the other hand, SUPER nice guy.
