WLOS in Asheville put APP/Akron on Sub Channel
I emailed the GM about the game and here is his response.
"We are carrying the App State game on WLOS sub-carrier 13.3, and the Brevard College game on WMYA, 40.1.
We have advertisers that want to support Brevard College as a local school located inside our TV coverage area. Unfortunately we have little sponsorship interest in App State after they left the Southern Conference. Their opponent, the University of Akron, has no local ties to our TV market."

So, their interest in us was only because we were in the Southern Conference???
I guess I can exercise my new lack of interest in anything WLOS.....

I know it is laughable. I sent this response:Longrifle28 wrote:So, there interest in us was only because we were in the Southern Conference???

I have watched your sports coverage a few times recently and I can tell it is very much centered on local sports (mostly High School). If you ever decide to add more regional coverage, hopefully, App State might get a look. Aside from competing at the FBS level, the good thing for App now versus being in the SoCon is all our games are also broadcast on an ESPN platform. So, App fans will be watching this one on ESPN3.

He probably is alluding to games with Furman and Wofford which are technically in their viewing area.
I am happy for Brevard College or Mars Hill to get exposure and the advertiser is ingles supermarkets as they are big sponsors of both small schools.

WCU enjoys constant coverage and is roughly the same distance as ASU. Never understood that.

WCU is only 45 minutes from Asheville and is in the WLOS TV market.Chard wrote:WCU enjoys constant coverage and is roughly the same distance as ASU. Never understood that.

Just because you're in a small town market doesn't mean you should act like you're in a small town market...Hell, App State is proof of that, who would've thought that we'd be hosting Miami within our first 3 years of going FBS...it's all about how you perceive yourself and want yourself perceived to others.

beat me to it....App is technically in the Charlotte metro media market, whereas the Asheville area is included in the Greenville/Spartanburg market...WCU, Wofford, and Furman are in this market.TheMoody1 wrote:WCU is only 45 minutes from Asheville and is in the WLOS TV market.Chard wrote:WCU enjoys constant coverage and is roughly the same distance as ASU. App gets no attention from any of the local media outlets in Asheville. Both tv and paper are all about the Catamounts. Never been able to figure that one out. When I drive around town, I see more ASU stickers etc than WCU(probably 5:1). I know dozens of App grads but very few WCU alum. Very frustrating!

Yeah, I can't believe the guy would support the program in their media market via coverage. I actually know and have worked with Jack for a few years doing high school football...he's very old school. And it's also possible that someone at App rubbed him the wrong way, either personally or simply a contract not working out in the past. Could be they have a guaranteed buy from Ingles if they're broadcasting WCU or Brevard or whoever and think that's higher than a last minute App St game.

Actually, Asheville has quite a lot of both WCU and ASU alums. If the CATS can ever get FBS ready, maybe the Sun Belt can add them one day. Speir has turned it around but can't believe they let ETSU beat them last week.

Not gonna happen. They have to get FCS ready first.luvyosef wrote:Actually, Asheville has quite a lot of both WCU and ASU alums. If the CATS can ever get FBS ready, maybe the Sun Belt can add them one day. Speir has turned it around but can't believe they let ETSU beat them last week.

Nothing WLOS does surprises me. Clueless! They did jump on the 3 peat bandwagon for a while. Their sports coverage is terrible. And the Citizen Times is worse if that's possible.

When it comes to media coverage for Apps, I click on the Winston-Salem paper and Watauga Democrat. The ACT is horrible. Go Apps!wncapp78 wrote:Nothing WLOS does surprises me. Clueless!
