Re: idiot students
Another dorm life circa 1982 memory:
Justice Dorm, hall bathroom: Heavy ice on the inside of the shower room window most of the winter. Not uncommon to walk in on a couple showering together
Some idiot taking a leak on the steam radiator that was located next to the urinals...steamed urine filling the bathroom...
Walked in on Sat morning and someone had tossed their groceries all over the bathroom the night before. Cleaning staff refused to clean it so that bathroom was out of comission for a couple of weeks.
fun stuff
one of my kids went to UTK, private bathroom and weekly maid service. it is what it is...

Re: idiot students
Truths all around from both sides. More money is made now than ever before, but things costs higher than ever before. There are also more “wants” vs “needs” available to the consumer. Streaming services, phones and their unlimited plans, huge car debts (and also the length of the notes), food delivery services. There are so many more things available today that we (including me) have been conditioned to think is normal that just didn’t exist 20-30 years ago.
Houses have increased in price over the last 30 years but the average new home has also increased in size by roughly 1,000 sq feet. Interest rates are actually still near all-time lows. People want certain things so the corporations provide them at certain prices.
To paint a broad brush, I don’t think the luxury items are what is doing this generation in. I think it is the multitude of small things conditioned as “normal” that add up. The problem is there are just a plethora more of these small things than there use to be. It is a challenge to get ahead but it’s still possible if you say no, which is difficult when most people have grown up to only hearing yes their whole life.

To clarify one thing on my post above because I don’t want it to be taken the wrong way - I’m not saying streaming services are why this new generation is struggling. I was just giving example of things that didn’t exist but are now widely used.

Re: idiot students
I just want to say that we had a TV wheeled into our classroom and watched a plane fly into a building live and also still had to finish class.
Man, every generation had stuff. This whole going in circles thing helps no one. To be fair it really didn't get outrageous until after 2020 so most of these problems are new-ish.

I think this is what is so amazing about football and just how special sports in general are. There's so many of us from different generations, different locations, different past experiences, different social classes, different political views, and different world views, all of which divide us. Yet, for a day, we all put on our Black & Gold and in unity cheer like hell for our Mountaineers. The guy next to me in the stands may be on the opposite political spectrum as I, but he'll be the 1st guy I high-five when the fireworks go off and Adam Whitten is saying "and that's an App State Touchdown."
There is beauty and power in Unity. I feel like we as American's have forgotten this. I hope all of us as App State sports fans can agree, that instead of focusing on way's we are different and celebrating groups of individuals, that we focus on unity and everything that unites us. As both Americans & as Mountaineers.

Re: idiot students
Aren't Millennials by definition at most 25 years old? On Jan 1, 2026 wouldn't the oldest of the Generation just turn 26. Middle school children is possible Iguess, if they have High School age children that kid is either Doogie Howser or someone deserves to be in prison

Gen Y (millennials) are 1981-1996 (29-44 year olds)
Gen Z - 1997-2012
Gen Alpha - 2013-2025
I'm barely Gen X and honestly believe I got the best of both experiences. i.e. internet at age 16 and of course this board!

Re: idiot students
Wow, well said. Now how do we convince folks this is more important than a transgender playing a game?Gonzo wrote: ↑Tue Sep 02, 2025 3:37 pmEntirely serious. I don't know the level of depth to explain here. Simply put, the transition from a consumer-focused to a shareholder-focused economic system beginning in the 80's. Boomers ignored the threat of climate change when decisive action was possible, dismantled public investments in social programs that could have strengthened opportunities for future generations, and ushered in an era of economic insecurity that has left their children and grandchildren poorer and more anxious. When my generation came to economic prominence (I'm 36), it was already too late. Inflation-adjusted wages of non-billionaires have been stagnant for four decades while the economic divide between a few thousand people and the rest of us exceeds that of France just prior to the French Revolution. This has snowballed, particularly since 2016, and allowed the most wealthy to put their fingers on the scales of every system we have. Citizens United et al. Our current system is a mixture of consumer capitalism, fascism, and feudalism, and there's nothing any 30-something can do about it. Older folks moving to smaller homes are selling their family-sized homes to private equity for cash offers. Millennials and Gen Z need two professional incomes just to live like a tradesman with a stay-at-home wife in the 70's. It's completely f*cked.
I know dozens of boomers who are kind amazing people who are no more complicit in the creation of this modern dystopia than I am, but as far as who was the working and voting age generation when our nation began to take this path is clear.

One of the first signs welcome to 4th Floor Eggers was put up by my "older and wiser" Eggers RA Barry Zimmerman -
"If you blow grits, no matter for what reason, You clean it up!"
Of course no one did.
Always get a chuckle remembering some of his witty directional signs for us new young Freshman
Lived in Justice in '83-84, it was an old dorm back then..lol

Nothing says, “welcome to adulthood” like gang showers in the dorm.
Also, don’t forget surviving on stuff like ramen from the hot pot on your desk, Boone Bagel by the dozen, $5 pizzas at the Red Onion on Mondays and $5 Hindenburgs from Macado’s on Tuesdays…all because your meal card ran out of money way before the end of the semester.

Simple, quit letting males play in female leagues and stop stealing opportunities away from females. Even one of my staunchest liberal friends, who has 2 daughters, is completely against his party on this issue. Some folks are able to multi-task when it comes to political issues, and this one is important to a lot of folks on both sides of the aisle.
How do we convince those that cheer on the invasion of females' spaces, that it's not fair for women to compete against men?

One of my last meals in Eggers after running out of money when the semester was ending was a hot dog left in the fridge I cooked in the hot pot and when I was almost finished eating it I happened to look at the bun and it was green mold all on the inside.

You are 100% correct that a lot of people see this as an important issue.moonshine wrote: ↑Thu Sep 04, 2025 1:47 pmSimple, quit letting males play in female leagues and stop stealing opportunities away from females.
