What are the odds we see a clean break with Dowell? Looking at him with Chesney last night, with his kid on the sideline, and the post game presser, he certainly looks checked out.

I realize he would be leaving money on the table probably.
Zero. Unless you will pony up $4 million for the buyout

Don't you think that might be the worst possible outcome?
Not if it happens asap

Have to give Dowell another year to see if he can’t sort things out but I’d be lying if I said my patience wasn’t being tested this year. Had our grown men looking like a pee wee football team. I guess all of our goals are ahead of us…..in 2026
I’m all for giving him another year but man this level of effort and response really makes me question if he is what he is.

I’m not talking about buyout. I’m talking him willingly going to a p5 OC job

Not necessarily. There are ways around the buyout if he has checked out.

Re transfers add Hopper, Hollifield, Samuel, all of which would be starting. Playing calling has been abysmal. Coach seems to have a smartest guy in the room/Napoleon complex. Doesn’t seem to be embracing App State. Many assistant hires were suspect. Shit show.

He is no Napoleon, that guy won a lot and then was overtly confident.

It’s $1.8M after Dec. 1 2025. Still a sizable number. Probably wait one more year to see if improvement happens.

Our staff seems too young. We’ve got sub 30 year olds everywhere. Maybe because we don’t have the budget to pay experienced coaches?

A serious football school would have fired someone today. Anybody. Yesterday was a complete failure by every single coach and player. Accountability is gone
Which school, with a first year staff, has fired coaches in the first season after a bad loss? I am genuinely curious for some examples
I don’t think anyone really expects an actual firing. Mostly just blowing off steam. But the ass kickings are troubling
No I would really expect the weakest link to be fired.

And to me it’s S&C. And it’s not his first year.
Really hoping for a change here too

JMU is who we used to be.
Cignetti was their Satterfield and left.
Chesney is their Drink and will leave.

We will see if they get their next hire right. My guess is, yes.
I am now envious of them.
Totally different strategy then have/had.

Cig and Cheney were both successful fcs coaches that built programs.

Really wish we had gone that route this year

Would this be a good time to set down on an over/under of how long it takes before App fans start calling him Frodo?

I read the contract, I don’t see anything remotely close to a 4 million buy out. I could be completely wrong. Show me.

Unless he just hates it st App. St...and never wants another Group or Power conference HC job again, I have a hard time seeing this. What school would ever hire him again as a head coach...tough road there.

I totally understand how frustrating this season is. It is tough to watch a problem that we've made emotional and financial investments in look this bad. But to talk about firing a coach after year one makes us look as irrational as Auburn, and not even they pull the trigger this fast.

Also, I didn't think his post game comments were that bad. He mentioned that talent disparity several times. We don't look like a good team because we're not. His job is to fix that. That's going to take a few years. This season is worse than I expected, but any coach would need some time to fix these problems. Problems that have been there for several years.

It also requires him to look for another job and then that income offsets the buy out. Note that he could owe us money if he leaves early. The contract is easy to find and not very complicated to read. Make sure you note the words “base salary”.

It was my bad. Agreed. It is over $2.0 million.. would we pay that or even $1.5 million after just one year?
If we pay this out, how does that restrict the compensation to a new coach and/or overall funding for the program. I am not advocating for or against the idea...just thinking about this from a financial perspective. How deep are the pockets of our rich donors that fund these types of ideas.
At the end of the day, the overall athletic department needs App St. football to be successful to a certain degree I would believe.
