That is the hope for all teams sure, but I think that there is a popular misnomer that next man up becomes as good as the guy he is replacing when he steps up. We’ve been fortunate with guys like Duck, but replacing Jolly with a transfer and a true Freshman doesn’t mean that they become Jolly. Do you recall who stepped in and struggled when Stringer went down? It was ADG. He seemed to get better as time went along but he wasn’t up for the task from Day One.

Re: Defense Issues
Also, we're struggling with lack of balance from Drinks two recruiting classes. He simply didn't care about balance because he knew he wouldn't be here long.
Classes are now back to balanced, but to do so, we had to take less at certain positions than we wanted. **Edited to add** We are balanced now assuming we can continue to redshirt the players we want to redshirt.
So, yes, we have better depth than FCS years, but the teams we are playing also have better depth than FCS years....

Re: Defense Issues
I've heard ADG was pretty good...AppSt94 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 26, 2022 10:34 amThat is the hope for all teams sure, but I think that there is a popular misnomer that next man up becomes as good as the guy he is replacing when he steps up. Re: Defense Issues
So, here's a little bit of improvement from the Defense: First off, when we were getting tackles for losses, pressures and sacks in the first half, our defensive backs were aggressive and had pass break ups. As someone said earlier, our scheme is predicated on pressure and tackles for losses (we've been in the Top 10 in the Nation in previous years). When the front end wrecks havoc, our back end makes plays.
JMU only converted 2 of 14 third down conversions. They were 3 of 6 on fourth down. Add in the two turnovers. Plus, the defense came up with two big stops. First, after the Brice sack/fumble at the end of the first half, JMU took over at our 10 yard line. Our defense made the third down stop and their kicker gifted us a missed FG.
Then, on JMU's last drive that mattered. After giving up yardage, we dug in and stopped them on 4th Down to give the offense a chance.
To take it further, we turned the ball over on downs to start the second half (and left valuable points on the board). Defense forces a three and out. We go three and out on offense (not resting the defense) and our defense forces another three and out. Our offense goes three and out again.... then we give up a touchdown on a short field. Our offense picks up one first down, then punts after a total of six plays. We give up the long TD drive. We throw an interception deep in our own territory the next time we have the ball on the first play. Another short TD.
Yes, we were gashed on first and second down. Yes, we missed tackles again. Yes, we gave up 29 straight points. Yes, we are not getting the push up front to cause havoc for a full game. However, I feel like our biggest issue was an extremely ineffective offense that not only didn't provide the ball control that we had against A&M, but really put our defense in a bad position due to their second half disappearing act.
